Perry Miniatures question...
« on: 18 June 2013, 08:43:36 PM »
Do people think the following will work for Old West gaming?

I'm no expert on period costume/equipment but I'd imagine with a little bit of tweaking these could work for the 1860-1890 period. Suggestions and/or sources for appropriate scale figures/weapos from other companies most welcome.

Absolutely, though some Perry's are quite small - so if you're matching scales, maybe check em out first.  The Old West covered such a large portion of time many miniatures can fit with the period.  Add the huge influx of immigrants from mainland Europe and you can get away with almost anything.  The only real issue would be using weapons equivalent to the proper time period.  There is a big difference between the Mexican War and say 1870's etc.  Even then though, plenty of old relic weapons could be found in households.

While we're on this subject I even looked at a handful of the "In Her Majesty's Service" (or whatever..the new VSF game) as it has some cool Orientals and some guys who could have found their way to the west (sans sci-fi goodies).

I will probably try to use mostly Perry figs as I'm a bit of a fanboy and I enjoy (struggle with) conversions. As long as they scale up with the Perry HYW fig I've used as a reference for my terrain then all will be well.

If you are going to try and populate a whole town though you will need to expand beyond the Perrys. I would think that Dixon and Wargames Foundry would be good matches.

I have those in my lead mountain to use as townies or sodbusters in Wild West. IIRC they are the ACW Riot figures?

Beautiful work on the clothing patterns, I've never had success doing plaids and checks.

Both sets would fit in nicely into most Old West setting. Both sets are very nice figures & should go well with many of the other Old West figures out there.

Perry Civil War cavalry sprues come with a couple of Sharp's Carbines...but that's a lot of money for a couple plastic rifles.  Not sure if anyone comes with spare sixguns etc.

I've got some Perry ACW plastic bits I could be persuaded to part with - extra arms, heads, etc from the ACW Infantry box.  PM if interested.
