Pulp Alley Driving Tutorial ---
Mila will turn 16 this year, so I thought it would be a good time to post a Pulp Alley Driving Tutorial. Rather than the typical “wargaming vehicle” rules, Pulp Alley focuses on the action and adventure aspects of driving. Please pay close attention, as there will be tests included.
For this example, we’ll say Pulp Girl is out for a leisurely drive around town....
TURN 1: The first thing she can do when she activates is “cruise” up to 8”
straight-forward. There’s nothing in the way, so Pulp Girl roars ahead as fast as she can....
After her cruise move, Pulp Girl can “maneuver” her vehilce an additional 8" (turning as needed). A maneuver move counts as an “action” for the driver, but she doesn’t have anything else to do so Pulp Girl roars ahead another 8”....
Then, at the end of her activation Pulp Girl carefully lines up for the next turn....
TURN 2: Oh no, there’s a cart in the way. What do you think Pulp Girl should do?
A. Give up her cruise move and then safely maneuvering (8”) around the cart.
B. Cruise straight through the cart and keep going as fast as she can.
That’s right, B is the correct answer! Cruising through the cart will require a control check (random challenge), which she passes (Cunning x 1) and keeps on going....
After cruising 8" straight forward, Pulp Girl maneuvers (action) around the corner and lines up for her next turn....
TURN 3: She has lots of open road in front of her now, so she speeds ahead another 16” (cruise + maneuver) and then lines up for her next turn....
TURN 4: Surprise! A truck pulls out and blocks her way. Pulp Girl only has room to cruise forward about 2” before needing to maneuver around the truck....
TURN 5: Finding herself driving up a ramp, what do you think Pulp Girl should do?
A. Do not cruise any further, but maneuver back down the ramp and carefully avoid the truck.
B. Cruise ahead as fast as possible, jump off the ramp, crash through the crate, and keep on going.
That’s right, B is the correct answer. This is Pulp Alley -- go fast!....
The challenge indicates that it’s going to take a little finesse to pull this off. She fails the control check (Finesse x 1). Her back tire slip off the ramp and she swerves towards the building (direction determined at random).
Failing her control check (crashing into the crate, hitting the wall, and slipping off the ramp) also brings up a Reliability check for the vehicle – which she also fails. The car drops to a d6 Reliability – black smoke billowing from the motor....
TURN 6: Pulp Girl exits the smoking vehicle, enters the warehouse, and throws the keys to her father.
Dad asks “How was your drive?”
“Not bad.” She replies.
HAVE FUN
