Ship's bits.............
« on: 02 July 2013, 06:04:18 PM »
Does anyone know a UK supplier for 28mm metal ship's accessories? I'm making a small Pulp riverboat and am looking for things like a ship's wheel, some gauges/dials, a hatch or two, rope stanchions, maybe small deck guns and anything else that would look nice on a small boat about 30cms long.

Try looking for 1/48 scale model boat fittings or possibly O-Scale train boat kits/fittings.

Good luck.
I look forward to seeing your boat.

It is amazing what you can find in the beads and jewelry section of the local craft store. In the U.S., we have a couple chains (Hobby Lobby and Michaels) that would very likely have things you could use for them. On a more expensive note, there is a line of supplies for model shipbuilders that have an extensive selection of nautical bits in various scales.

Well, i am absolutely sure that there are some out there....White Ensign Designs is the first that comes to mind. Another one is Arsenale Shipworks although i am not sure what they have in their productline. But like Amalric already wrote.....model boat fittings are a good source. I will have another search of my favorites and see what comes up.

For deck guns try:

Pulp Figures:  http://pulpfigures.com/products/view/110

Other deck accessories:

These guys have quite a few bits of deck hardware:

For this boat I drilled three holes into a toothpick and ran a thread to create these stanchions:

Or,  go to your hardware store and look at the rabbit cage 1/2" wire mesh screen - endless stanchions with nothing more than a wire snips!

Yup, I'd check Reviresco. And I seem to remember Pulp Figures having some ship stuff... but maybe that was just weapons.

Grubby Tanks. They have taken over Britania molds & do various ship bits. I bought lanterns, figureheads and cannons.

You might have to try and look at more "unconventional" locations. I immediately pictured a small round airfilter of some kind making a great ship's wheel. A couple pieces of plastic tubing, one slightly larger than the other could be used to fashion deck guns of various sizes.

Orders are in with various suppliers suggested here, thanks to everybody for your help. My boat won't be up to the standard of Johnnytodd's masterpiece but I'll post a picture when it's finished.
