UK sci-fi wargames show
« on: July 09, 2013, 10:10:38 PM »
Howdo folks.

I am organising a sci-fi themed show for 2014 and am wanting to share the joy with as many people as possible.

The show's details can be found here:

Please spread the word!

Hi Michael,

On your blog it says you are looking for gamers/exhibtors/traders to pay to attend...is that correct, or did you mean just traders (ie the people that if they are lucky might recoup some revenue through sales)...and punters paying an entrance fee on the day?

Well-run games make a show, as they draw in eye candy - personally speaking I'd be interested in supporting the show with a game, but it would cost me a tank of petrol to get to Bristol (from York) plus a night in a hotel, so the prospect of paying to run a participation game leaves me cold.....

 ;)

Regards.

Matt

Bristol is even further for us (Scarborough), but we'll bear it in mind.
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Hiya.

It is true, and very unusual I know.

The reasoning is to be fair, simple, I can't cover the costs with traders alone, unless I charge them more, which may put them off, which would in turn kill the show.

I feel though that £10.00 is not bad when you consider it is for a days gaming.
Many hire venues and clubs and shops, if not most charge for table hire.
Plus if you get 4 of you putting the game on then it is only £2.50 each which again is quite good for a days gaming, especially given that gamers get free tea and or coffee all day and a comfy chair (debatable comfort value, though surely better than standing all day)

Now, if the show is a success, and I hope it is, then the entrance fee will make up the missing money that is needed to stage the event, and maybe, just maybe I can pay some of the gamers back.
If it is a hit, then the following year I can no doubt let gamers game for free (no free drinks though!).

I also hope that by people paying to support the show, it will help discourage no-shows.
Nothing kills a show like empty tables.

Also nothing upsets people that were turned away like empty tables they could have used.

So, yes I do charge but hopefully all told it is a fair price and all being well those that paid will have helped make something great!

Michael.

oooh here is a thought, maybe the game of the show wins £20.00?
That could help ease the burden of paying maybe?

At a show you want the games to interact with the punters. Recruit and engage. If you're charging for the game space the tendency will be to just play the game and ignore the crowd.

Having seen the pics of Akkys planet of the apes game at salute I would pay him to turn up. The entire thing is a work of art. Having pics of that in the local rags human interest/community events section will draw lots of people in.

If I might suggest something. A whole bunch of people here put on big demo games full of stunning terrain and beautiful figs and they have all been playtested and played to boot. These games are the rock bands of the minis world. You dont charge the band to play, you use them to draw in the punters and you make them pay.

Never been likened to a rock band before....always imagined the groupies would be better looking....

We'll be there with SVfM ( www.spacevixensfrommars.com ) and have paid in advance to support. Agreed the fuel makes shows prohibitive these days, but sometimes you've just gotta... :)

Aye, I went to Phalanx this year and after fuel, venue fees, hotels and food and what not I ended up quite out of pocket.

This however is clearly much betterer!

Flattery will get you everywhere....  lol

Alright then, I'm in....mind you, Planet of the Apes was this years game....my other projects are Aliens, BSG and Dune.

Dune will certainly be ready by October 2014

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=54787.0

BSG might be a bit longer

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=31057.0

Either way I'll stick a participation game on.

 :)
