Daler Rowney Soluble Matt - Original bottle?
« on: July 31, 2013, 07:18:08 PM »
Hey guys,

I just purchased a bottle of DR Soluble Matt varnish over ebay.co.uk, as the company has a shockingly bad presence in Germany, and received the below pictured bottle:

Now I am used to them looking quite different and I am wondering, did I get a very old bottle or is the "for USA only" marking (oper left corner in the picture) a clue and this is the packaging for the US? Anyone know?

Regards,

Dimi

Just had a look on the site of Schleiper (Belgian store) and they carry the solvent-based mat varnish (for oil and acrylics)
While the label is different, the bottle looks just the same (and also holds 75ml)

Interesting... I really don't what is going on here. My google-fu has failed me miserably. The liquid smells different as well.

That may be a "poison control" label that our litigation-crazy country requires. I saw the U.S. toll free number near the bottom. So, the info on that label may be required only in the U.S. and apply only here. If someone from outside the U.S. tries to call that number it probably won't work.

That's my guess....which, of course, could be wrong...!

Interesting topic. I also acquired a bottle like this one recently to replace my empty old one. It also surprised me to see the new design. The varnish works the same and works well, but it has frosted on me for a couple of times. That was weird, never happened with the old product. I covered the frosty areas with some more varnish and this helped most of it. The rest was covered wth some washes.
So not a big fan of the new stuff if they changed the formula, but it does the job most of times well nonetheless.

Interesting! I used the varnish once since getting it and find it doesn't respond exactly the same way as my old ones. It leaves much more of that weird particle-like shine and what's really weird it doesn't seem to separate into two layers after a while.

Umpf I really hope they haven't changed the formula!!

If you want matt, go for modelmasters dullcote, but make sure you get the square bottle, not the round one. (and some thinner as it's solvent based)

Well, I've tried MM and I never managed to get a good effect with it. I love DR, but the way it was. Anyway, I've bought another bottle, lets see if that's any better.

I've got a bottle of this new stuff but with the old label, it doesn't separate but you still have to shake the hell out of it before use.
Still an excellent matt finish which is what counts  8)
