Waffen SS - WiP
« on: August 06, 2013, 11:07:20 AM »
Again taken from another forum.

As far as I am aware this post conforms to the rules regarding the subject, please, please edit as you see fit mods.

I am aware of the fact that the uniforms are not correct and the figures I picked are my preference, I have tried to make subtle changes to cover issues like hoods on smocks etc.

Please feel free to make comments either way  ;)

-------------

Not been on the board since starting painting my Romans when they first released, so been a while since I have been on here. Recently got into Bolt Action (Not played a game yet) and fancied having a go at the Waffen SS Camouflage.

So here is my first humble attempt.  :?

------------

Quote
Hate to be a bit of a git but that is not an SS Grenadier.  That model is Heer - you can tell by the hood on the camo smock, SS smocks did not have hoods.  Artizan have for some reason sculpted hoods on some of the smocks and called them SS.  Also, Oakleaf trousers were very rare and they tended to be field grey or by June 44 Pea Dot camo.  In fact pea dot was very common and can be seen in a lot of Normandy photos of captured SS and is easily confused with Oakleaf.  The nearest SS unit to the landings was 12th SS HJ which had only just stood up as a Pz Div and therefore was mostly equipped with Pea Dot camo.  Thought you may be interested for the next lot!

All that being said it is a superb paint job!!!

Thanks for the info, yes I was aware of that prior to my purchase. It makes no sense for him to sculpt them like that didn't know why he did it years ago nothing has changed, hence why I tried to do the test figure in a parka in autumn colours. The Pak 40 crew are worse, I'll be getting a Warlord ones to replace it, don't talk to me about the gun it's dread full.

I didn't know about the trousers but I have seen some in pictures but I am unsure where? I have been painting Dot Pea as well and most of mine with be in Dot Pea or Italian for the 12th SS, I was considering the 1st SS still undecided.

Here is my dot pea testers with added helmet covers.

I have to apply filers and weathering to them which will dull them down and muddy up the knees etc.

Thanks for all the other comments and encouragement, always open to comments  :D

------------

Here is a quick update.

------------

UPDATE 18th April

Progressing with my SS, have finished most of the uniforms and weapons, faces etc, still have to add filters to tone the camouflage down. Will be picking up some Warlord decals for them at Salute.

Really enjoying painting them.  :D

Next will be the HMG team I think and maybe the Mortar.

This are great well done! What paint did you use and what colours for the different camos? Oak Leaf Spring, Oak Leaf Autumn. Plane tree and others????

Thank you for your comments. A good tip before I start is to paint the dots with a cocktail stick, sounds sill but you can change the size of the dots and they are dead cheap, make sure the paint is fairly runny and you can get 4-5 dots each time.

So far for the summer I used:

Vallejo 825 German pale camo - as the base
Vallejo 822 German can black brown - Dark Patches
Vallejo 833 SS Cam Bright Green - base for Green dots
Vallejo 857 Golden Olive - Highlight some parts of the green

Winter:

Vallejo 825 German pale camo - as the base
Vallejo 822 German cam black brown - Dark Patches
Vallejo 981 Orange Brown - base for Green dots
Vallejo 805 German Orange & 981 Orange Brown in a 50/50 mix - Highlight some parts of the orange

Dot Pea 44:

Vallejo 826 German cam medium brown - as the base
Vallejo 988 Khaki - light patches and lot and lots of dots
Vallejo 975 Military Green - very dark green almost black, patches and dots
Vallejo 833 SS Cam Bright Green - light green patches and green dots

I based my colour choice and pattern based on lots of photos and images of original samples like this:

I hope this helps, I need to get better photos. Any questions please let me know.

------------

Still in the process or basing them and painting the equipment, taking my time as I have been painting the Puma and 251/1 in between.

Lovely painting, I'd be very pleased to own those (even with the hoods, which I didn't know about!  :D). Thanks for the camo painting tips too.

everything I see is flawless and pleasing

the only thing that scratches my retina is the very bright green that I personally might tone down a bit

You will have trust me on this one, it looks a lot duller when I run a filter over the uniform and in real life and not under the lights. I shall try and take an our door photo when I have them based.

Very nice work. Figures look great, will no doubt work a treat next to your Puma and 251.

Very nice. Do you use coctail sticks for the pattern or a brush?

Fantastic work - looks just right. I think the idea with camo is very often just getting the right feel as it were...
