GWM 1914 French Cuirassiers
« on: August 15, 2013, 02:54:10 PM »
Had hoped to have had the time to paint all six different figures, but alas the last two get bumped to the back of the current queue. So, here are two troopers, the trumpeter and the officer.

Fantastic work!  :-* 8) :-*

I wonder though if the cuirasse could be painted in tan? I know that they were covered, even in the first days of the war, by a cloth in the same color as the helmet cover. Did the cuirasse on the figures themselves look obviously "bare"?

very nice! a lot of accurate details, nice painting with specific colours (light blue triming on trousers or red horse hairs of the trumpeter etc .....!!)

best regards

Top Notch Painting! Looking at these minis though almost brings tears to my eyes thinking how wrong men on horse wearing cuirasse and Napolianic helmets were facing Maxim guns!

Hi Guys

Calimero...

The cuirasse on our figures has been modeled as uncovered but it would not be to difficult to paint as covered.
On the subject of covers...it is quite difficult to find a picture of Cuirassiers with covered cuirsasse's.
There is a nice picture from prewar manoeuvres showing covers but there is no official description of such an item being issued and no examples appear to exist today.
The first regulation covers appear in January 1915 and were horizon blue.
It would seem that units would dull the cuirasse down however they could ,rust, dirt or locally acquired material .
There are also pictures of troops(also on prewar manoeuvers ) wearing only the 1860 padded waistcoat this could be misread as a cover.
Hopefully these pictures will be of some help...
I have included a shot of cuirassiers escorting German prisoners to show that uncovered cuirasse's were worn in action.

All the Best Aly
