Advice for Estonian in Afganistan.
« on: 07 September 2013, 01:38:45 PM »
Hi Chaps

I was thinking of a small force of the Estonian force in Afganistan but have run into a problem. I understand that they are US led and have seen pictures (listed as Estonian soldiers) of them in US equipment but all the info I find still says they are using the Ak 4 as the main rifle.

Can anyone clear this up?

All the best James

The only American weapon they use is an M14 Sharpshooter rifle, or a variant of that weapon. I think most of their gear is actually German as well, not American.

They use Galils short and long, as well as a variety of add-ons. DMR is the M14 (TP14) as said, MG3 (GPMG) and Negev (LMG). Estonian 1st reserves use the G3/AK4, while the second line have AK/AKM etc.

There are a considerable number of images about for them, they seem popular guys.

There was a detachment serving with the British in Afghanistan, so plenty of vids showing them in action.

Dear God, they really must wonder what they're doing there.

Dear God, they really must wonder what they're doing there.

Without moderating myself as regards 'current affairs' I would imagine that's a train of thought shared by several varied contingents that have served out there...

;)

Mongrel's 1982 Israelis spring to mind... but I think the weapon is about the only thing on them that will work.

The easiest way to do these would probably be the Dadi i Piombo Italians in helmet. The body armour looks about right as does the webbing. If you cut the carry handle off the rifles they make a very good facsimile of a Galil. Just make sure you get the packs with the folding stock.

Dear God, they really must wonder what they're doing there.

Doing what all soldiers do in all conflicts do - serving their country by working to meet their government's political goals.    8)

Nations don't declare war anymore - would require the nation to list why and what the intended political goal is...   >:(

I think I stayed relatively "politics free" in the above.   :D   ::)

Here is an interesting little tidbit, apparently the Finnish Government wanted to sell a number of Patria wheeled APCs to Estonia, BUT only if the Estonians agreed to never send them outside Estonia. So the Estonians went against the purchase and instead picked up a bunch from the Dutch.

I'm sure just having them in Afghanistan gaining some good combat experience is probably the main reason they are there. You just can't beat experience afterall.

Getting back to the point mind; I haven't seen anywhere that sells Galils as seperate.

Carlos seems to have the best idea imo.

Probably what I'll do the problem is they been sold to sergeant major game who will not to release them until later this year. Something wrong with the molds.

Seem odd Finland in Afganistan to.
