Astounding Tales game
« on: May 17, 2008, 04:24:27 PM »
Ran my first Astounding Tales game and here is a short report and some photos from it. The photo quality is not very good.

The heroes were Sam Slade PI and his assistant Miss Goodhead, Mr. Withers and Mrs. Godfrey werewolf hunter, and Lance Boyle PI and his spunky newsboy friend Sylvester. The group crossed swords with The Count and his minions of vampires, werewolves, hellhounds, cultists and skeletons.

In the first act the heroes needed to resuce Professor Armitage from the cult at the Old North Church.

After a brisk fight in the Church and the graveyard the heroes learned of the Count and his castle in the woods from the Professor.

In the woods the heroes were attacked by werewolves, but thanks to the quick thinking of Mrs. Godfrey, they found some wolvesbane in an abandon cabin and took care of the werewolves.

Next it was off to the castle and the final confrontation with The Count. After a very close run battle which claimed the lives of Miss Goodhead, Mrs. Godfrey and Sylvester, a cowering Lance Boyle "got a grip" and destroyed The COunt for good.

A great time was had by all and we are planning another adventure soon.  Sorry about the quality of the photos.

Cheers,
Troll

Cool game with nice scenery. Next time, don't shoot with the flash on, it tends to blow out the contrast.

Also, what is the make of that silver car?

The car is from the Jada Dub City Old Skool line.

It's 1:64 and looks a little small next to a 28mm Pulp Figure, but it's all I had.

I like the Astounding Tales rules. They are simple but have enough detail to do all the "pulp" stuff that needs to be done. The rules are written to capture the feel of an old pulp serial film, so a Director is required to play to set the scene, control the bad guys, and make rules decisions. A single D6 is used to test for success and a roll of equal to or lower than your stat is a pass. (There are rules for a more traditional vs. game, but I haven't tried them yet.)

If you are looking for a more traditional you vs. me game .45 Adventures, I game I also enjoy, might be more to your tastes.

The first edition rules for Astounding Tales can be downloaded for free at the Astounding Tales Yahoo site.

Cheers,
Todd
