I don't think that is an issue anywhere other than the UK. I believe that they could have kept the trademarks in other countries if they had just refiled for them.
Indeed. But, at least in Spain, they didn't do that.

Anyway, new Heroquest seems to have finally died. :( A pity, in my opinion.

I'd have thought Game Zone using the original HQ TV advert would have left them open to a legal challenge regardless of any other copyright or trademark issues. Using another companies advertising in your own advert, presumably without consent, seems... risky.

@Laughing Ferret- GZ claimed their game would be compatible with the original so it's the same game, even if they've changed all the wording to avoid breach of copyright.

It's a shame the game won't return, but then I'd never have backed the KS without seeing a more developed product. They even said the renders of the characters that flashed up in the video weren't what was to be manufactured. ;D

Agree but GZ played their cards in the worse way, and thinking to be more clever than anyone else, in Spanish there is a word for this attitude: "Listillo".

The good point, I hope there is a good point in all that mess, is now the industry has their attention in a niche that seems to hold a potential marked, the nostalgia-dungeon-crawlers HQ look-a-like. It seemed the niche was covered with Descent and a few more but I would say this HQ will put in the production chains some new game in that style.

While I genuinely don't understand the amount of angst here...I am curious if we'll see Gamezone release the miniatures they had planned/designed for HQ25 anyway.

2025 Painted Miniatures: 336
('24: 502, '23: 159, '22: 214, '21: 148, '20: 207, '19: 123, '18: 98, '17: 226, '16: 233, '15: 32, '14: 116)

¿Listillos? ¿O simplemente chapuceros? No dejan de ser andaluces... ;D

Apparently they'll try in yet another crowdfunding site. Honestly, as much as I'd like a new Heroquest, I can't bother any longer with all this. If it ever reaches a store, I'll buy it (like in the old days, remember?). But no more legal roller coasters.

I would expect all American fans to back out of this after this misery, after all who wants to chase after his money if his game reward gets stopped at the U.S. customs inspection?

If it's failed on two crowd funding sites it is definitely too risky to try. I was all for the game originally.i thought it was going to be epic! However there is too much risk involved. Please GZ change the name of it and release it as something else. Then we can still get a nice game out of it and also use all of the stuff with the old heroquest rules if we want to, which I definitely would.

Yep, I'd back it in a heartbeat if it simply changed the name (the original Hero Quest was shockingly generic and simple so it'd be tough to criticize a new generic dungeon crawl board game).  However at this point I won't be backing it solely based on the lack of confidence it will remain underway for its duration.

We're not necessarily buying the name...we're buying the game (or some reasonable facsimile thereof).  Personally I was buying it for a box full of minis and maaaaybe a game to play with my nephew.

To me there is very little difference between "Hey man they're re-releasing Hero Quest!" and "Hey man they're releasing a game which is basically Hero Quest from back in the day!".  Both are equally appealing.

Heck you can even say "inspired by games such as Hero Quest..." in the damn advertising.  No one cares.

Yep, and I think a lot of people would have similar thoughts too.

If the game and figures have any merit on their own then the name is irrelevant.

They should just stop all this crowdfunding nonsence and just bring out the game.

I generated over half a million in less than two days on kickstarter obviously there is a market for it. They do not need crowdfunding to get this of the ground.

To me it just feels greedy.

right,  but very probably they don't have the funds to pay the production, check their site, its a very small producer of GW-clone-miniatures, they never released a gameboard like this before.
And currently in Spain no bank gives credit to any company for any project, well.. except if you are the son-in-law of the King or if you want to build a resort in a beach, they don't care about any other kind of projects.

After the rejection from Verkami I would say their project is definitively down, sad because I had plans for the resin scenery for my own project :-(

Can someone explain this line of reasoning to me?  I see this sentiment a lot from people on this board and it confuses me.  How is a Kickstarter greedy?  If you give a company X amount of money now...or give them X amount of money later, how does one of these options make the company greedy or malicious?

I commonly see the argument "well, Kickstarter is for upstarts who don't have resources etc...".  So what?  Why do people get so upset at companies for using Kickstarter programs?  I've never seen customers be worse off for doing so (short of crooks like Tony from Defiance Games etc.) if anything quite the opposite - getting a ton more product for your buck.

I'm just really confused when I see people "Argh, I hope they don't do a Kickstarter for this..." etc.  Is this just old guys getting their panties in a bunch?  We've seen how massively successful kickstarters can be.  If I was a company it'd be the first angle I'd consider for new product launches.  Why not have money up front instead of a bank loan (and associated fees/interest etc.).

If you don't like the Kickstarter idea...just don't buy the stuff till it's on the shelf.  I really don't understand the malice toward the crowd funding idea on this board.  Boggles the mind.

PS: I should clarify, I agree...obviously the market is there (and if anything that'd be a great way to convince a bank to loan you the funds needed etc.).  I guess I don't see why anyone cares how a company funds it's products...as long as the products get to the market and you can buy the thing.

Are we tolerating now offensive regional stereotypes here?

For you, English-speakers gents, the comment says:

Smart-pants? or just cheat? It's Andalusians we're talking about...

Not "cheat", but "clumsy". Very different thing!
And it was posted humorously, hence the smilie.
But if someone's offended, my apologizes.
