Harolds Huscarls Saga warband
« on: 21 September 2013, 11:55:38 PM »
I've put together an Anglo-Dane 4pts Saga Warband, that represents Harold and his huscarls. All painted by Paul Cubbin.

All the figures are Crusader Miniatures.

Beautiful work, love the leaders tunic and for some strange reason the edge of the standard bearers shield lol.

This. Photos 2 and 3 are feehand (the easy ones!) and the rest are transfers. I'm a real convert to transfers after seeing how good they are now, but they do require some work to 'bed them in' so to speak and dirty them up a little.

Really quite stunning work! I've got the same figures in my WAB Anglo-Saxon army (except the Harold Godwinson). Mine are not, however, painted to this exemplary standard... :'(

shields and tunic are fantastic, but what impresses me most is the work on the helms!

Funny enough I'm thinking of doing an article for WSS about it, since my shields seem to get good responses these days. Basically I try to blur the edges of the transfer with dark washes and inks and then put little nicks and scratches, plus general muck and tarnish, all over the surface.

Being Dark Age shields, I also gave these ones leather or metal rims, which help to hide the edges of the transfer. If you paint a little nick in the shield rim, and then carry that nick on into the face of the shield, it also serves to marry up the two sections and helps to fool the eye.
