Bjorn Halfbreed's Isle of Man Raiders
« on: 26 September 2013, 01:04:11 PM »
I've been adding to my mighty force of raiders in drips and drabs over the last few months and I thought I'd share. Bjorn himself leads a rag-tag of Scandinavians and Gaels (so I can muck about with different models and names), and will follow along later.

Most of the models are Gripping Beast, but the character models are Redbox Games. From now on I'll probably be getting Crusader Vikings from North Star, having been impressed with the quality after painting some up for Nick.

First up, Grimm the Bald.

Fresh from the Medieval Painting Order, it's Morthwyl-y-Goch.

Hvitarnor Horn-Drainer.

And a smattering of Gael-Norse raiders.

This fella deserves a mention on his own, he's the first of my warband to be painted, just a bog standard Bondi. He was also the first dark Age model I've ever done, so it was on him that I started to cut my teeth on the period, trying to keep the colours fairly drab (but varied) and the metal dull but serviceable. His name is Ulred the Ordinary.

'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

There is only one way to describe these - superb. I would be ashamed to put any of my armies on the table against your minis.

Thanks for sharing, even if it depresses me about my painting skill!

Stunning work, as usual, Cubs!
 :-* :-*

The stuff that you have been posting these last couple of weeks is of an exceptional standard and very inspirational.
Thank you!
 :)

I shall, of course, have to curse you later for making me want to buy even more stuff that I may never get around to painting....

lovely, especially like the first figure, love how you have done his bald head and those trousers with that fine yellow stripe are sublime.

Any chance of a group shot so we can see them side by side. Do Redbox and GB mix well? The painting is absolutely stunning! Very atmospheric.

I'll see if I can shuffle them together for a team photo. You're probably looking at the two extremes with Redbox and GB - the former are very finely sculpted with delicate crisp features and quite small heads and the latter have quite large bulky features and extremities.

I've raised up my Redbox models slightly on the base with bits of slate, to make sure they're not dwarfed by the others. I wouldn't try to mix them in one unit, but since it's a skirmish force I'm happy enough to use them as character leaders.
