How long does toilet paper last for?
« on: 12 November 2013, 08:33:04 PM »
It's a genuine question! Honestly!

I picked up a rather nifty tip for using 2 ply toilet paper as net curtains on my Victorian builds. It looks quite good. The thing is if the stuff doesn't last long and starts to disintegrate after a few months its a no go. So does anyone know?

Loo rolls don't hang around for long in my house so I've got no idea what the paper's shelf life is, it's not as though the packets have a 'best before' date on them. Or do they? Hang on I'll have a look .............................................
Nope! No best before date.

Soooooo, anyone have a clue?

(While I await a mildly sensible answer I expect nothing less than the usual barrage of humour  ;) )

Don't!

Interesting. Never thought of using bum wad as a project material since it is designed to dissolve in water. Paper napkins, snot rags and rolls have better durability and a 1000 uses. I bet you have to use some kind of lacquer spray to make the bog tissue more resistant.

I'd hate to disappoint so, "Dunno, I only use mine once."

I have terrain with PVA coated TP that is well over 20 years old, so I'd say go for it.

I just drop a little thin superglue into it to make tarps, sheets and other draped items.  To avoid overloading it, I pour a little into a bottle cap then use a thin tube (such as from an ear bud shaft) as a dropper.

Ps: it will fume as the thin fibres react to the heat of the glue so best test first and have plenty of ventilation

I have water bases made with pva soaked toilet tissue that have outlasted the plasticard they were built on.

I have tried both Superglue and PVA to make tent awnings and they are extremely durable. One of which must be over 15 years old and is not showing any decay.

Hey TC,

My best advice is simply to ask the master.

He uses it a ton for his projects. See what DMScotty has to say. Might be able to ask him through YouTube or head to the forums and ask through that avenue. Enjoy :-)

Maybe you should write to Andrex and see if you get any freebies?

I'm sure the stuff we had at school had little bits of wood in it. I've had loo roll in boxes with figures for almost 20 years and it's still there. Some PVA should definitely make it robust.

Key thing to understand about toilet paper compared to kitchen roll is that they are made to perform a task in a given way:

  • Toilet paper is designed to dissolve when wet so it does not block drains
  • Kitchen paper is designed to hold liquids and breakdown over a longer time

Key thing is to coat the paper with glue just in case drinks etc are in the area!

Now I need to work out why my brain keeps such items  lol  o_o  lol
