T'other gun
« on: 23 November 2013, 09:51:34 PM »
Often when I get stalled on another project, I start something else. Sometimes it is an entirely new project, other times it is using up the failed bits of the original project.  When I was toying with some 28mm ACW "large" guns I started a Parrott barrel that lingered in the parts box.  Exhausted by foam carving (very physically demanding let me tell you!) I put together yet another big gun.

The base is a bit of foam core, the barrel of the beast is a paintbrush handle with some plastic added. The carriage is Evergreen sheet and rod. Needs some rivets yet and some metal rings, but it is well on the way. (and farther along than the original project...)
Regards, Rob.

Very good  8)

How about using base guitar string for the screw thread, it should be a bit finer  :)

cheers

Always a pleasure to watch your builds and your use of plastic sheet.

An extremely elegant piece of scratch-building there.

Amazing skill with the styrene! Inspirational stuff, and my mind is blown how you make small styrene washers!  :o

What glue do you use for it all? Plastic cement for the plasticard and superglue for the metal/wood?

Cheers

Thanks guys,

Great tip on the guitar string, I just used what I had at hand. But now I have to go get some more Grandt Line rivets to finish it off. The red bit was a plastic sleeve from my parts box that was just the right size!
It is pointing the correct way, but there was a lot of variation in design.  The carriage will actually sit flat, like a naval gun.  Many land emplacements had the carriages elevated at the rear to limit recoil.  Not sure about the blocks and ropes and such.  Some photos show similar naval type carriages on land positions with little or no rope work.  Lots of blocks and rope if it is on a ship.
The band on the barrel was stuck on with Contact Cement, other wise Testors' Liquid Cement for the plastic and yes, superglue for the metal bits.  Only problem with the Contact Cement is if you use too much it will disolve and distort the plastic.

Regards, Rob.

Finally a couple of pictures of the completed gun in position.  Pink foam, strip wood, and terrain gravel were used to make the gun position.  Likely add some tufts or greenery to tie it into my other projects.  Regards, Rob.
