I felt that the Fallout world is more light-hearted than 3 really managed.
That sums it up better than I really could.
3 was a brilliant post-apocalypse game, but it didn't capture the Fallout feeling for me.
It was just too whiny and emo about things being bad.

The humour's an important part in the series too, and while 3 touched on it, it was drowned out by gloom. D:

Really disagree with this one. But in Fallout 3 most of the humour isn't that obvious and you have to work to find it. In my absurdest game (~110 hours spent in the game) I did EVERYTHING I could do in the game. So visisted all the sites, opened each and every box/cabinet/etc., talked with all characters, found all items and special stuff. And yes, that was an insane ride. There is just so much fun stuff going on and there is so much in the details. Scrounging through houses you often find scenes which don't add anything to the gameplay, but add so much to the gaming experience. Something that wasn't there in Fallout 1 & 2 (because graphically it wasn't possible at the time I guess). Fallout 1 and 2 offer more depth and humour in the conversations, text and silly random encounters and in Fallout 3 it's more in the graphics (although the random encounters can be hilarious too). And I like that, but that's personal.
Personally, I liked New vegas a whole lot less than Fallout 3. Didn't like some of the factions (Caesar's Legion was one of the daftest ideas ever IMO) and the story and elements are way more diluted than in Fallout 3. Yes, I did spend 150+ hours in the game to do everything, once again. But it didn't feel as good as Fallout 3 IMO. I did really like how New Vegas is an excellent bridge between Fallout 1+2 and Fallout 3. That was a brilliant move.

I have to agree with you malebolgia. I wasn't really a fan of Caesars legion. Too weird looking for my liking. Also I felt that 3 had a more interesting area to explore not to mention the storyline being vastly superior. I played fallout 2 and have to say the theme of it has stayed fairly similar, 2 may have been even slightly... Grittier(?) and more adult themed (you could be a porn star) I'd like to see them returning to new Reno from fallout two tbh.

Sadly New Vegas was missing a lot of what was meant to be in there. Apparently you were meant to see far more of Caesar's Legions empire across the other side of the Damn and it was meant to be well run and efficient while relying on slave labor.

The game wasn't meant to be so black and white originally. Personally I liked the concept of Caesars Leigon but they didn't execute it was well as they could have.

I know I would have loved to see more Legion territory. Get a better feel for their society, style and culture. Aside from the whole. They are slavers so are bad rout.

Ohh don't get me wrong anyone who keeps slaves is a massive knob. But you were originally meant to see that the citizens were safe and happy and that there was law and order in their territory ect ect. Instead you just get one camp with a gladiatorial death pit. It was so disappointing.

Yeah there is great humour in FO3 such as the gnome who has tied two teddies to the train track in the presidential metro  ;D

I thought Caesar's Legion would be based out of (and named after) Caesar's palace, they were a bit disappointing. Also felt the much-maligned story to 3 was better. To me, once I killed Benny in NV I felt "Why am I now supposed to care anymore?"

I absolutely liked the smoothness of the gameplay in NV better, but I like the Wasteland of DC more in FO3.  To me, moving away from the area of the NCR and the first two was a way to allow more, rather than limit it to less.
The characters in NV are better, too.  I loved having Cass or Raul along for their comments - Dogmeat was the only companion in FO3 I could tolerate.

I liked Fallout 3 much more than New Vegas.  I thought that there was no atmosphere in the overall experience in NV like there was in FO3.  FO3 looked like a wrecked city and its environs, NV to me was just a desert.

NV to me was just a desert.
And that's the way we here in Vegas like it! :D

I loved Fallout 3. Of course it was different to Fallout 1 and 2 but it was the first time an ego perspective RPG with heavy ego shooter elements. Nevertheless the atmsophere was dense. The first time you enter Megaton was such a special feeling. The to defuse the bomb there and to become a hero who is on the radio the whole time was also great. I really remember very well the first time i went to the supermarket to find food and aids in order to write a chapter about survivin in the wastelands. This was so awesome. The whole story was great and the original end when you die was also fitting vera well.

Falout 3 catched me very fast and i played it through several times now.

Fallout NewVegas on the other hand needed a little bit more time to catch me. The start in Goodspring instead in a vault was different but ok. But the real potential you get to realize in the second half when you have so many possibilities to decide which site you support, these many subquest to try to evaluate all these factions (Boomers, Brotherhood, Omertas....). This made the game so intense. The main factions NCR, House, Yes man i liked vers much, but the Legion was too one dimensional and i also did not like their weapons so much. But as enemy the Legion was acceptable. Also the companions were so much cooler, because each of the, had their own story. To help Boon to find out who let enslaved his wife and child and let him get his revenge was simply awesome. The rocket  quest to help the ghouls to fly away was also great.

I love both games. Each of them has its own strengths but both of them really gave me the Fallout feeling.
Please help me with my Fallout rules, picture heavy!!
