Daiso Treasures
« on: 14 December 2013, 06:24:54 AM »
I fell in love with Daiso stores when I discovered one many years ago in Japantown in San Francisco. As with many shops of this type, it's a cavern filled with wargaming treasures. And all at a fixed low price (AU$2.80 at the moment in Australia).

A few weeks ago they opened a store in Flinders Street (Melbourne), so the wife and I decided to check it out today. It's pretty big (granted not as big as comparitive stores in Tokyo), filled with potential wargaming goodness.

This thread is a place to share your treasures (being useful for us as they have stores all around the world).

First up, two 15mm scaled Hughes OH-6 helicopters. they're just under 100mm long, with the rotars being 80mm long. So a pretty good match. I'm going to strip them and paint them for modern gaming, but there were a few other toys, terrain material and tools in store.

There are plenty of 15-20mm cars, some larger 28mm size tanks (but I didn't look at the plastic in detail as they were too toy-like). There were jets (10 - 15mm) which could pass for mecha. The toy section wasn't overly huge - about twice as large as most $2 shops.

I went to the Daiso in Bourke Street the other week and didn't see any (corner Bourke and Swanston - in the basement next to D. Smith), so I might have to try their other stores.

I'll admit I've been slightly put out by you English K-nig-hts and your Poundland stores and its treasures (god I wish I had all those Russian 1/56 cars!).

Basically the crappy $2 stores here sell, well, crap. Daiso is Japanese, and takes the concept to a place only the Japanese know how to.
