Moonfleet. Sky TV.
« on: 29 December 2013, 03:11:56 PM »
Anyone watch Moonfleet on Sky TV last night?

It has certainly reignited my desire to recreate some smuggling antics on the Dorset/Cornwall coast.

I purchased all the required figures some years ago so i have just got to get them painted now. Perhaps that will be my New Years resolution. ;) lol

Sounds interesting.
Shall have to have a peek when it comes out on DVD, providing good further reviews, of course.
 ;)

Hadn't heard of that Nick, and seeing its on Sky, not likely to see it anytime soon..  :'(

My Dads from the Isles if Scilly, so piracy and smuggling run in the genes. I have some of the smugglers Foundry did a while ago, and a couple if Horse grenadiers tucked away for a similar project.  ;)

I really want to see this as I live on 'The Snout' or Portland as we all know it and just across the water from the Fleet that inspired Falkner's Moonfleet. Sadly, as I don't have Sky, I'll have to wait for the DVD.

This area of Dorset was rife with smuggling in the 18th century along with being notorious for wrecking ships. Hundreds dot the coastline. Portlanders would plunder the foundering ships before the sea took them.

Just finished watching it.

Big fan of the South West and the 18thC (heaving bosoms, tricorns and black powder ;))

I believe it was actually filmed in Ireland.
My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2025 = 74
(2024 = 38; 2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

I look forward to seeing how they portray places so familiar to me.

@ gutbukkit I'm from Dorset originally, not far from lulworth cove.

Lulworth and the surrounding area are my second favourite parts of Dorset after my island.

All this talk of Moonfleet and smuggling has certainly made me want to do a more local take on my 18th century pirate/smuggling project. Don't know why I didn't think on it before. Maybe my obsession with the other Blackbeard (to my friends I AM Blackbeard) in the Caribbean set my course for warmer climes. Modelling my local coastline would be a great project.  As for Carisbrooke Castle, I know that well too having spent a week camped within its walls during some Viking reenactment.

It was on Sky 1, which is one the free channels on Virgin Freeview.

The second part was not great, the story went downhill rapidly for my tastes. Still I'm going to pursue this project in the New Year.

Ray, I probably the same figures as you have collected plus a few extras i povked up along the way.mlol

Have recorded both episodes but not watched them yet - so no spoilers please.

@Malamute, I've a book on Smuggling in Devon and Dorset somewhere, if I can find it I'll hand it over for you to read.

Watched the show back to back having recorded it. It was good but could have done with three episodes to really get under the surface of the story.
