US Airborne Screaming Eagles for Bolt Action
« on: December 30, 2013, 01:43:56 PM »
Hi folks,

I recently started assembling and painting a US Airborne force and I couldn't resist choosing the Screaming Eagles for now over the All American as there is just sooooo much background information available thanks to Band of Brothers. So I started watch and read as much as possible about the 101st Airborne 506th PIR and it has been a really interesting experience so far.

Here are three minatures into which I invested a bit more time and effort - an NCO and a sniper team:

Here is a link to some WIP pics as well as more pics from the first squad that I completed too: https://plus.google.com/photos/113457264506811055210/albums/5947238443049991921?banner=pwa&authkey=CLyYwtj225G7IA

I also finished a few more guys for my second platoon yesterday. The pictures aren't great as these are only quick shots with flash - will provide better ones soon.

Feedback and questions are, of course, welcome!

Cheers,
Thomas

Impressive. Really quite impressive. I'd love to know how you did the stubble, because I still struggle with it.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaah !

Painting stubble is actually pretty easy. The key is to thin down your paints VERY much. You want to have a consistency which is more or less colored water and with that you glaze carefully a few times over the lower half of the face. I usually do my brush strokes with the side of the brush from the cheekbones downwards. Also, it might not be obvious that a darkish blue is the best color for stubble. I usually use any regular blue and mix it with a little bit of one of the skin shadow colors.

Blue? Really? I'd have guessed you used greys or browns!

Gothic Line, I see some Artizan Designs but mainly Offensive miniatures in his collection ;-). The only guy I don't know is the guy with the binoculars.

Thanks Kane ! the one with the binoculars could be an improvisation so as to have a spotter perhaps!

Very fine work indeed, I especially like the little markings (the US lettering on the rucksack, the flags etc) which must have taken some time.  Lovely!

Thanks guys!

The binocular guy is from Offensive Miniatures as well.

The previous pics with flash really annoyed me. Here are better ones without flash:

Have a great start into 2014!

Would it be too much to ask to tell me which colours you used to paint your airborne and how you went about it? I have a feeling you inked as well, but I'd like to know for sure, as I think my airborne are ... well, too clean.

Have a good start in 2014 yourself! :)
