Pulp Alley Solo
« on: January 08, 2014, 02:55:17 PM »
does anyone play pulp alley solo? if so how?
i have challenges playing with others on a frequent basis.  i was thinking about borrowing the card driven activation method from other games (rules with no names, sharps practice) so initiative/activation is random.

cheer,
Pete

Never played it solo, but I have played games with automated NPCs. You could certainly do dino wrangling solo, or play a darkest Africa game with simple rules for moving natives. Throw a Terror in and you have lots of solo fun! Also, the beauty of the peril and plot point rules are that you could make everything extremely perilous, so simply achieving an objective is challenging.

I do sort of. I combine the rules and especially the personal character cards (which determine the sequence of activation and who controls the initiative) of the 'I AINT BEEN SHOT MUM' system including the 'TEA BREAK' card, along with the 'PULP ALLEY' peril cards in a hybrid combination of the two whilst maintaining a non bias attitude towards who wins. Randomness reins supreme which takes away any favoritism and the dread of trying to out think myself tactics wise.  ;)

Here's a little something that might help...

You can download a PDF version from our yahoo group -- https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/pulpalley/files

A version of these guidelines may make it into the Vice Alley book, so any feedback, ideas, and suggestions you care to share will be greatly appreciated.

Dave,

Thanks for that PDF, I'll have a go with that on my next game which is quite soon. Very interesting.

pistolpete,

I play my games solo using Pulp Alley rules. To be honest, I virtually played the game straight from the book by acting as two seperate players. Sounds a bit odd, I know! I used a notepad to remind me who had the initiative. I just had two seperate set-ups at each end of the table, league sheets, dice, challenge cards etc. I played from one end of the table and then sat at the other end to become the other league, the two games linked below were both solo but of course there were only two leagues. With Dave's PDF above, I might try my next one by playing two leagues as before but adding a robot league of nefarious villains. I need to take notes as I'm getting a bit senile! I stopped for coffee and couldn't remember whose turn it was!

You have to love Pulp for no other reason that it is so open to humour and over-the-topness. A bit like Warhammer was in days of yore.  lol

Yes, it was the humour that drew me to Pulp, plus the fact that I could have characters as diverse as Allan Quartermain, Tintin, The Shadow, Marlene Dietrich and Bertie Wooster on the tabletop at the same time!

I should have clarified that I use "bot" to refer to the opposing forces which are not completely controlled by the player.

Assuming the player is fully controlling the protagonist and his/her colleagues, the enemy forces are the "bots".

I like the idea of 'bots' as it will bring something completely different into my solo games, thanks.
