Company Compilation
« on: 10 January 2014, 01:29:57 AM »
Currently compiling all company lists I can and sorting them (a bit) by theme.  Themes are subject short (usually two word) descriptions I've arbitrarily given them from a short glance at the list.  Please correct me on any of them!

Anyhow, my hope is to compile the non-published lists into a printable form for print-on-demand sites to use, so folk can do their own mini-books if they are so inclined.

This means I'll be massaging tables and text to fit templates and fixing the more obvious typos.  I'm hoping to include images where I can find them.

Anyhow, list here-

Nice compilation .

Colonel Dugommier Bureau Fantome is still on the workbench ...
with 5 other french companies .
Jeanne Des Baux ost ( some kind of Joan of Arc trying to restore monarchy in France )
Les servants  de la Bête ( Satanist cult based on the "beast of Sarlat" legend )
Arséne et ses droles de dames ( the greatest robber , some kind of Don Juan too, and the ladies )
Les Gadzarts ( secret society of engineers, heavy weird tech guys, with walker, airforce, etc )
Les enfants du pêre lachaise ( french socialist revolutionnary secret service ) .

all will be involved in our future franco-french campaign . with a cognoscenti company .
Dans les situations critiques, quand on parle avec un calibre bien en pogne, personne ne conteste plus. Y'a des statistiques là-dessus.

Most of my companies are still in the testing phase but I will finish the five I have on the forums and a few I have in my note book with backgrounds, completed characters and the lot. Also if you need any help feel free to PM me, I like the idea and will help if you need it.

I'll create a shared cloud area for the working files do anyone can help.

Currently the plan is to transfer existing lists to Open Office documents as that program is open source,  free, retains images,  can embed vectors and save easily to PDF.

I've done all the web lists but not the PDFs so far.

Next is correcting typos

I would like to photoshop images folk used to look like lithographs as I want to victorianise the look of the compilation :-)
Something similar to the Mole Men look but not based on a particular stationary type.

Another way folk could help would be to find images where they aren't yet provided.

If you're a list creator, rename your files with WIP for work in progress or COMPLETE if you're sick of fiddling with it :-)

I'm reserving the position of chief editor because it's my idea :-) This means organising, doing the official template and putting together the lists into a single document whenever a significant time to publish occurs. Also tracking editions (but not versioning)

I'll post a link shortly.

Need to work in credit as well for authors and editors.

For images,  own miniatures for preference.  Otherwise get permission if possible.  Don't stress too much over copyright as this will be non profit self published fan material,  which is usually let go by various litigious companies as they iften realise it improves the brand.

To the list authors:-

I've noticed some folk have put copyright on their lists.

If any author is worried about losing the rights to their lists (whether they are original or fan derived, doesn't matter) - please let me know ASAP and what kinds of rights you'd like to retain.

The minimum changes I'd like to make would be layout and images so all lists matched.  Ideally I'd like to make the lists editable by anyone involved in this project, but still crediting the original author.

Options-
I can not include your list, and I can also not include a mirror or editable version of your list in the dropbox folder - let me know what is most convenient.

Credit-
On another author note - please let me know what name you want to be creditted with in the compilation.  For some authors, all I have is your internet username.

Good idea to consolidate the Company lists, Curufea!

Some responses concerning my stuff:

1. I have put Copyrights on my Companies: I'm not in it for the money, just wanted name recognition for the work. I have no problem with you reformatting the material and posting it as long as it's not altered (Players, of course, are welcome to do what they d----- well please).

2. Please drop the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn from the list. Since the Golden Dawn still exists, I changed it to the Cult of the Temple of Isis (and altered some of the jargon) to avoid copyright issues. It's otherwise the same Company. I have ceased working on the Dresden Files and Van Dorn Detective lists because of potential copyright problems with the creators of the characters. It's fine to keep those on your list, though.

3. Forschungsgruppe is not just a "German Cult:" it's actually the archaeological research arm of the Society of Thule. "German Archaeologists Cult" would be accurate enough, I guess, since the racial views of its leader are certainly cult-like. Also all the characters are based on actual German Victorian archaeologists, or on German characters from the Indiana Jones movies.

4. The Blackwoods and the Warrior Monks Company is a trio of British siblings and a band of Tibetan warriors who have sworn revenge against the Society of Thule. It's hard to boil that down to 3-4 words, but I think at least "Tibetan warrior monks" would be more accurate. They're really not into "marital arts" in any sense of the term: they are all expert in various weapons (firearms, bows, and/or swords).

5. I have revised most of the lists to be backwards compatible with HVF: these are listed here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=62023.0
Craig has promised to post these upgrades for the three on the Player-authored materials page on the blog sometime soon.

6. All of my Companies are finished products (at least until Craig's next book comes out  :D).

Hope that helps. Good luck in all your endeavors!

Michael O'Brien

Dresden may be okay. The author is a gamer. I'll email him. Authors often are pretty okay with giving rights, it's similar reasons as to yours that they use them.

We have always encouraged people to put a copyright symbol by their name and to include a date. As an author it is always good practice to do so. This is more than just giving due credit.
The main purpose of this is to warn off people who may feel they can otherwise profit from your efforts. I can imagine someone trying to sell other people's lists and home-made supplements through one of the many document sites on the interweb.
If you are adapting someone else's work, such as Jim Butcher's Dresden, then a short statement saying that the original material remains copyrighted to them is good manners and probably very sensible. Asking permission is the honourable path to take but can expose you to all sorts of legal nonsense.
At the end of the day if what you are writing is going to be distributed for free, does not disrespect the original material and is essentially a homage to them then it should be fine. After all Games Workshop, who have some very active IP lawyers on the payroll, have allowed Gavin and I to continue to produce In the Emperor's Name with just a heft copyright disclaimer in the foreword. You can still copyright your adaptation for the reasons given above.

See attachment for the template so far for this compilation

Needs a bit of tightening.  I'm hoping to get each company onto 2 pages, with the descriptive page first.

Well, the Ancients of Kaled just blew out the idea of only having 2 pages per company :)

The Students of Niten'ichi will are done soon and please refer to them as Japanese Rebels.

I will copy right all my list but the Predators, in fact they may not be allowed in any published work.
