Holocostco Project (POst-apoc terrain) Updated 2-16-14
« on: February 01, 2014, 10:12:52 PM »
So, I am trying to build a Super-Duper Mart/ Holocostco to use for a Pulp Alley Fallout game, and I need some advice.

Here's what I have so far:

So, here is my dilemma - where can I find shelving similar to the stuff found in the Fallout game, and maybe cash registers and vaults as well?  I am going to try and find myself an embossed paper for the flooring, but I -really- don't want to have to scratchbuild all the shelving and such.

Any help will be appreciated.

I tried scratch building from mounting board - it wasn't very good. I also tried a desk from balsa - to a similar result. I'd say grab some thick styrene and go nuts - if you do them as a production line it will be much quicker.

Pardulon has some great shelves (empty or with assorted goods on 'em) as well as a nice safe.

It's beautiful stuff, but the cost might kill me.  I did just get a commission for painting a Warhammer observatory for a friend...

Ah, yes, you're on the other side of the ocean.  :?
Just had to pay €23 myself (taxes + services) for some cards I ordered from the BoardGameGeek store. That's roughly the value of the items  >:(

Well, I ordered a set of shelves and some lab equipment anyway - I did just get that commission, and have another on the desk.

And about 1/3 of the cost was shipping.   :?

That's the problem with shipping overseas. Small packets (low value) get through customs without problems, but cost a bunch in postage. If I try to get the best value for posting money, I also get a larger bill from those custom jerks.

You're off to a great start, Sinewgrab. I won't be able to walk into a Costco without thinking "holocostco"!  lol lol

Honestly, you might be better off scratch building the shelving. Just keep it as simple as possible - a central panel, and 3-4 shelves on both sides. You could probably even make it out of thin/cheap cardboard. Do the whole store for the price of an empty cereal box.

The shelves could be fairly empty, having been picked over. And if the roof has collapsed, then filling the inner area with lots of rubble and trash would also reduce the need to a bunch of boxes and shelves.

Looking forward to seeing how this goes.

HAVE FUN

I thought about scratchbuilding them, but I am just not able to get anything to work in large scale that I like.  I will see how Pardulon's stuff works, and then I will figure out where to go from there. I don't want it to look too picked over - otherwise it won't be as appealing to people playing a Pulp Alley game in it. I am going to go scratch a safe together - I forgot to order it (teach me to drunk order), and I am not paying shipping again.

Plus, I want to be able to move shelves around if I want, and the one scratchbuilt I made broke up too easily.

And more...

And I needed refrigerators and safes, and I couldn't find any that matched up nicely to Fallout - so I sculpted some.

As well as cash registers - this started as a small die, and I took a sander to it.

And they took to the molds well.

And painted well enough.
