Such a flamboyantly dressed leader.    I looked at your website at the mounted version, and he must have been quite a spectacle bringing on either inspiration or disdain amongst the fighting men. Definitely no middle ground to be had with such plumage and adornments!

yep.Murat was a source of inspiration and disdain
personally i greatly admire him (asisde from the loyalty aspect)
and may well do some more..........he took 50 uniforms to Russia
as well as pots of facial mayonnise!!

Whenever I see Murat I think of my old hero, Brigadier Gerard (as invented by Conan Doyle):

Murat was undoubtedly an excellent cavalry officer, but he had too much swagger, which spoils many a good soldier.  Lasalle, too, was a very dashing leader, but he ruined himself with wine and folly.  Now I, Etienne Gerard, was always totally devoid of swagger, and at the same time I was very abstemious, except, maybe, at the end of a campaign, or when I met an old comrade-in-arms.  For these reasons I might, perhaps, had it not been for a certain diffidence, have claimed to be the most valuable officer in my own branch of the Service.

i think you have hit on a good point there
i loved reading Brigadier Gerard though personally
thought he contains many of the traits of Napoleons
premier cavalry Generals but especially Marcelain Marbot
Colonel of the 7th eme Hussars in 1815..present at Waterloo
he received a lance thrust in the side ..kept command..for his troubles
saying the 7th eme were manouvered like"so may pumpkins!!"

Thanks Carl but you know, as austrian i have to know about tolentino. There were not too many austrian victorys at the time....
Alas naples is missing on my miniature front....
