miniatures as art. finished images uploaded!
« on: 13 February 2014, 07:45:57 PM »
So i'm in the middle of my final major project for college, and since these pieces got me a place at Wimbledon college of art for a sculpture degree, i thought you fine chaps might enjoy looking at them.
I took them to the college photography studio today and one of the second years was more than happy to snap them and edit them for me to really show off my work.
if anyone is interested i'm more than happy to explain the pieces, but personally i'm rather happy just looking at the pictures right now. :)

This is unfinished at the moment. it will eventually have several more skeletons with puritan robes and signs, and be contrasted with a second diorama showing gross excess.the two will be balanced on a set of scales ones completed.

This one isn't a miniature but i rather like it, and it was my first real experience of using resin.(fumigated an entire floor of the college.)

Very nice. I would be interested to see the full set of scales when done, so please post it here!

Alright chap's, iv'e now had two offers for sculpture degree's and have an interview for goldsmiths thanks in no small part to my use of miniatures and dioramas to portray my ideas.

Now, in order to complete this full diorama by the 26th, I've ordered two boxes of wargames factory skeletons
, because they are simple, plastic and cheap in bulk.
( i sculpted 7 out of the 50 or so i need but they're too spindly to cast and its taking to long)

.I'll be reposing them and just generally messing with them, but i have a very serious question.
based on what people have heard or experience with these spindly things, i need to know,
How screwed am i?

I'll be assembling 60 of these into intricate dioramas, and the last thing i want is to find out that nothing i'm planning is going to work.

To be honest, they are a pain to assemble. I have managed to construct 8 of them before giving up. Although I had the older ones, the newer ones seem to be a bit less fragile ... You could also look at Ebob, he has metal skeletons although also a bit fragile if you want to repose them. The GW skeletons are way easier to assemble but are also more cartoonish and expensive. I hope this helps a bit  ;)

It does indeed :) i have a load of mantic skeletons upstairs but sadly i need plain "naked" ones for the work im doing.
im alright with fiddly (i've assembled the plastic malifuax archers) i just don't want too many obvious breaks on the focal miniatures is all.

I like the naive style. It feels Tim Burton-esque to me, with a touch of Eastern European animation for some reason.
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

I wish I could say that the style was deliberate, but its more a case of me not being able to sculpt and having to get the whole maquette finished fast to try and explain my ideas better. :D

Wow, you really are fine with fiddly, I had to put mine away before I smashed the stupid hats and their stupid curtains! They'll come back out again at some point :)

Look forward to seeing the finished item.

Salvador Dali was pants at anatomy and he didn't do so bad. To the gallows deny mate ... everything is deliberate!

I never said I enjoyed the experience, but theyre done.

Haha, the secret of surrealism revealed ;) you'd be amazed how many great painters talked about struggling with anatomy, it takes years to be able to take a pencil and draw a perfectly proportioned figure without need to measure from life. (speaking as someone who can draw everything fine but always tops it off with a head 50% too small)

right, cus and sanded my plinths in the workshop, got to sculpting my final bases for the dioramas.
here we have the ground work of the super ego diorama, currently awaiting skeletons and a good dark stain for the wood which is currently just painted with a think ink wash.really feel like i'm getting better at creating landscapes.if i had more time and money i'd like to have a proper go at making the ground effects myself rather than using gw's new cracked earth paint.

This took my about an hour all together, and like a fool o forgot to bring the other plinth home to do on my day off, so it looks like i'm FORCED to paint those lovely ralpartha miniatures i've got sitting about......for practice ya know ;)

Any tips would be great, i want to keep this one fairly light as the ID diorama will be pretty dark in tone.
