Junks, sampans, etc.?
« on: 18 June 2008, 03:08:09 PM »
I wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the construction threads.

I am working on a Sand Pebbles project this summer, for next years local convention. I want to "recreate" two parts of the movie. The battle on the river, and the rescue of the missionaries. A good friend built a U.S. gunboat for me, but now I need some chinese boats to stretch the rope across.

Has anyone scratchbuilt a Chinese boat? It looks like there were several different sizes.

Thanks,
Tom Reed

Hi Tom,

you can post this thread here.

We also did a Sand Pebbles Project.
We had one chinese boat and as far as I remember my friend Grimm had it from China. Maybe there are websites in Asia who sell them. Please contact Grimm for more info.

For Scratchbuilding something I would contact Westfalia Chris here at the Forum.

Good luck and fun for your project.

We like pictures  ;)

I just picked up the pirate junk from the last "pirates of the caribbean" movie at a liquidation store for $9 it looks like it can be converted for game use. needs new masts and the deck has to be replaced have'nt started yet so I don't know how hard this will be! it's about 10 inches long(24cm). hope this helps

My wife scratchbuilt some Junks and Lorcas a couple of years ago, if it's inspiration you're after I'll try and find some pics. :)

Old Glory has two Junks in the colonial ships range that may meet your needs. Price is OK and they look easy to fab/paint up

I just bought one of these and am very happy with it.  I thought it was a good value for the price too! ;)

Old Crow have 2605 Up-river Sampan , one of which I picked up on Ebay a while back, so far only undercoated but definitely suited as I see it.

Scheltrum has a nice range of oriental ships. They are meant for the 17th C but the design hasn't really changed all that much.
Included is a really big one of nearly 40cm.

Many thanks for all of the advice and ideas. I had forgotten about the Major Generals site. I think that I might try my hand at scratchbuilding something.

If you want more info about junks than you're likely to ever need, including plans, detailed drawings of hardware, etc., I'd highly recommend "Junks and Sampans of the Yangtze". Fortunately I got mine before it went out of print and the price went crazy.

Note that the Mega Bloks "Empress" Chinese junk from the Pirates of the Carribean line is cheap and should be reasonably easy to modify or repaint.

I bought and repainted all the mega blok ships (they were on sale for $30 each). Took them to a convention we had here in down under a few weeks ago and everybody wanted one, because they look really cool (The junk is obv. the ship in the foreground) The ship behind it is a resin model from the US (about $250  :D)

The pics were taken during a pirate game we did at the convention
