darquebus,

Is that the Pirate Armada Empress or the Pirate Fleet Empress? BTW, looks brilliant.

Note that the Mega Bloks "Empress" Chinese junk from the Pirates of the Carribean line is cheap and should be reasonably easy to modify or repaint.

I bought and repainted all the mega blok ships (they were on sale for $30 each). Took them to a convention we had here in down under a few weeks ago and everybody wanted one, because they look really cool (The junk is obv. the ship in the foreground) The ship behind it is a resin model from the US (about $250  :D)

The pics were taken during a pirate game we did at the convention

and another view

Cheers,

Darquebus (and sorry, I know this is an old post), how did you do the decks?  Inspired by this post, I found an Empress, and wasn't sure if it'd be easier to try and grind down the little lego bumps or lay balsa or strips of sculpy over them.  Yours looks great - how did YOU do it?
Check out THE CROGAN ADVENTURES, a historical adventure graphic novel series available from your local bookstore or comic shop (or, of course, Amazon).  I make 'em.

If you want to learn more about Chinese ship construction, particularly if you want to do your own, then I can thoroughly recommend Joseph Needham's books. I have a copy of The Shorter Science and Civilisation in China: 3, Cambridge University Press 1986. It deals with ship construction, sailing, everything you need to know.
If you want to give the Chinese a bit of extra clout then you might want to model these little beauties - Heavy jingals from the 1840's at the Royal Artillery Museum, Firepower, Woolwich

With the original tripod mount (rare)

Personally I think they look kinda cool and not unlike recoilless rifles. Colonial players, Aeronef'ers & VSF'ers out there might want to take note, particularly if anyone is planning to take the Chinese to Mars or Venus in the near future... My money's on someone doing a Korean turtle ship - now that would be good - its practically an ironcld to start with!
