Steam tractor & howitzer (could go for WWI...)
« on: June 20, 2008, 04:53:17 PM »
A while ago I posted pics here of the howitzer I had scratchbuilt a carriage for.  I then said I was "pleased" with the result (however, not "satisfied").  I originally thought of towing the gun with a Lledo steam tractor, but decided I needed something more powerful, so I finally build one of the PMC (resin) tractors that I had bought two years ago...

However, I was not pleased with the tractor's wheels either (they were great, but front and back of the same type & size), so I decided to "donate" the front wheels to my gun and replace them by other ones.  I also made a roof for the driving compartment from a Lledo Ford T one and some metal wire & drilled two holes in the body of the tractor so that the roof could be removed to be able to (re)place the stoker.  To enhauce the effect of the big wheels, wooden "cleats" (to drive in muddy terrain) from balsa were added.

Here we go:

following image shows the tractor without the roof and the trailer without the gun (which is held in place by a magnet) acting as a supply unit.

BTW (before you ask...) I do have a trailer that can take a steam launch to central Africa...  :D

Excellent stuff ol' chap!

I'd hate to be on the receiving end of that howitzer (or to accidentally trip in front of one of those tractor wheels).

Great work Rudi
Its nice to see someone fielding artillery with a steam-tech vehicle to tow it. Keep up the good work.

Steady, old chap!  lol

Great work Rudi - you appear to be in the same league as Papa Midnight!

We've had great fun using Afriboria for conventional Victorian games [in fact we will be doing another Sudan demo game at next years Triples in Sheffield], but so far haven't tried the VSFsupplement . Your models have made me want to give it a try as soon as possible  :D

Great you still like Afriboria so much!  The VSF supplement was written "as a supplement" (...), but since I spend part of my hobby time in making VSF stuff right now, I might (will...) write some VSF rules along the "Earth invaded" theme, but first I still have to paint a couple of VSF armies (sigh...) and create more "stuff" (the next item is on its way).

Best regards,

Rudi

WOW! :o

That is awesome!
The whole model "Goes" together really well. Your attention to detail is first class and the whole thing looks like a "real" historical vehicle.
That gun looks like it would give the enemy a real drubbing!

I tip my hat to you Sir!

:o :o :o WOW. That is fantastic. I agree that it looks as if it were based on a real vehicle. Once again something to make me wonder whether there is a pact with the supernatural and some members that I'm not being told about and allowed to join lol lol
Seeing all these makes me feel really inept in my attempts. :'( :'(
Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see what's next.

Cheers

Fritzy

Thank you PM, glad you like it!  It was indeed the idea to make the whole thing as "historical" as possible (VSF being a scientific matter...  ;)
