1:48 Universal Carriers With 28mm Figs?
« on: 23 May 2014, 07:02:24 AM »
Hi gents!

Recently my brother and myself bought some figs to start playing some Bolt Action games. We're planning on playing the North Africa campaign. He's got the Afrika Korps and I've got the British 8th Army. I was planning on buying some Bren Gun Carriers but I don't like the Perry ones or the Warlord resin ones. The new plastic Warlord one looks great, but I'm too impatient to wait. I was wondering if anyone has used the Tamiya 1:48 scale carrier with the Perry minis before?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Many years ago I bought the Black Tree carrier which is 1/48 and it was massive (and completely unusable). It looked stupid next to Black Tree figures so Perry miniatures will be truly dwarfed.

I'm after a Universal Carrier too, and have been looking around at the different options. I've found a few others, but would be interested to hear more and comments on them.

There's also the one from S&S models, it's 1/60 so should work nicely with the smaller Perry minis:

(plus it's a bargain price)

And one from Armt group North:

(they don't seem to have a EU/Uk supplier, so postage/post office extortion could be a killer)

Thanks Paul. That's a shame, the Tamiya carriers look like superior models!! More bits to put together but better!

what don't u like about the warlord ones if you don't mind me asking ? As i picked 4 up off of Grant and I quite like them. Plus they fit perfectly with the perry brits

That's me! I thought they were excellent. I would have bought more if needed. They are 1:56. The only ones I've seen that are nicer are the Perry ones. My opinion of course.

The Tamiya kits are indeed excellent but they will definitely dwarf the smaller Perry plastics, who will look like 6 year olds in them. Unsurprisingly, the Perry resin carriers are the ones which fit the Perry figures best. I bought the three model section pack last month and must say I find them very nice little models - but I'm no tank modeller and I'm not overly fussy about details as long as the vehicle's overall appearance looks OK to me. Others may have higher expectations.

It's nothing major Slayer. It's just the limitations of casting. The Tammy stuff is is in more bits and not a single piece casting,  so it just makes it a better model. The Warlord one is perfect for what it's supposed to be...A gaming piece. I just fancied putting a bit more effort in for mine!

I am also a huge fan of 1/48 and understand where you are coming from, yes the miniatures look wrong but for me the vehicle is what is important. As you are looking that direction anyway, if you like to add a campaign look, have a look at these:

I've got the Tamiya carrier and the Perry infantry. I'll try and remember to take some photos later.

The bits from the Tamiya sprues are very similar in size to the perry stuff. The Tamiyia figures are very slender.

Some comparison photos

First just some foot figures for comparison

Tamiya, Perry, Aritzan, Perry, Tamiya, Artizan

From above the differences are much less apparent.

Why on Earth did they produce that set of midgets? :-X

I would go with the resin carrier andgo amuck with bits and bops on it. You know you can do it...

1:48 and 25 mm will not be a long lasting marriage, I think.

May I ask what gives you that impression???

More and more of the 28mm mimiatures are HEROIC in scale and frankley plump. I use Artizan mimiatures and I think they are a great match, look above for height and scale.

Because 25 mm is too small for 1:48. 28 mm is better, but still on the wee side methinks.

People using the new miniscule perry figures with 1:48 are of course free to do so, but I reserve te right to say that I think it looks like the kids of the empire got a day out.  ;)

Those 1:48 Tamiya just look massive. Not even close. They are almost the size of a Sherman in comparison to the real 1:56 kits.

But hey, if it works for you...
