Great efforts all.

Plynkes, your last Hehe (lol) is very cool. Loving his white painted face look.  :-*

I think we need some proper expertise in the form of Allan Quatermain. He may drag us into an unwanted civil war if we stumble upon a lost civilisation, but he's also the man you want around to get you out of such a scrape.

Fancied doing something a bit different to your average movie-inspired Quatermain, who usually looks like some sort of 20th Century Pulpish Big Game Hunter in a Safari suit Roger Moore would be proud of. Thought I'd go for something with a little more Victorian period flavour. So...

No.37 - Quatermain vs. Cetshwayo

"This is not your quarrel. You and your servant have horses. Slip out, if you will, and gallop hard to the lower drift. You may get away with your lives."
Then my white man's pride came to my aid.
"Nay," I answered. "I will not run while others stay to fight."
"I never thought you would, Macumazahn."

H. Rider Haggard, "Child of Storm."

Allan Quatermain, at the Battle of 'Ndondakasuka, Zululand, 1856.
(Perry Miniatures conversion)

Late in the battle and Quatermain has lost his gun, so he has armed himself with the weapons of a fallen Zulu. But the tide has turned in this succession struggle, and Prince Cetshwayo's uSuthu have triumphed over his brother, Prince Mbuyazi's iziGqoza faction.

Quatermain finds himself on the losing side and is now fighting for his very survival.

I think we can let that in. It would be silly to lose an entry over such quibbling details. It's in the spirit of the rules, if not the letter.  :)

I think a lot of people are unaware of them. There are 18 Quatermain stories by H. Rider Haggard that I know of. Mostly novels or short novels, plus a handful of short stories.

Had a thread on the topic here on LAF a few years back.
