South Sasquatch Regiment
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:35:50 AM »
Inspired by a post seen on TMP.

Someone referred to colourfully named Commonwealth regiments, and mentioned specifically the "South Sasquatchewan Regiment".  That inspired thoughts of 7 foot tall hairy homonids wearing Canadian Army uniforms to participate in Weird War II games.

Any suggestions on where I could find suitable figures for conversion?

(I should admit up front that this is just a passing fancy, and I won't actually take this any further.  I really just wanted to throw it out to the group for consideration.)

Just tattoo a red maple leaf and an ID number on each and let em go, no uniform necessary.

Reaper has a nice Yeti, but only one, so it would take quite a few for a squad.

Well I think that's the first truly original idea in the pantheon of Weird World War that I've heard for a long time!
I'd copyright that if I were you, or someone will have it before you know it.
Presumably these 'missing links' would be much stronger, more savage, and harder to kill than mere homo sapiens soldiers? And presumably with few moral scruples...  ;)

Well, they're nor lead but you could use some of the StarWars Wookies from Wizard Of The Coast. They have quite a few poses and are available as singles from several resellers.
Tank? Vot kind of dumbkopf name is that for a Schutzengrabenvernichtungspanzer?

I think this is a fantastic idea and encourage you to see it through. If you won't; I will. You can easily convert the Wookie figures to hold something Sten-like.

But I think the Bigfeet should be unfailingly polite and slightly self-depricating outside of combat. You know, Canadian.

Interesting idea! As soon as I saw the word 'Sasquatch' in the heading on the Index page, though, I just knew it had to be an entry by another Canadian.  'Sasquatch' is so much more evocative than the unimaginative American 'Bigfoot'.  At least it sounds like a 'creature out of Time'! Much like 'Wendigo'!

I won't be able to do anything with this idea, so if Pete or anyone else is interested, please take it and run with it with my blessing!

More historical fluff:

The (real) South Saskatchewan Regiment gained fame during the Dieppe raid, where the regiment was one of only two units to achieve its objectives on the day (Lord Lovat's Commando being the other).  The commander of the unit, LtCol Merritt, was characteristically modest about his VC:  "My war only lasted 6 hours.  There were others who were in it for the duration."

Tying in to this, you could send the South Sasquatch Regiment on a commando raid alongside Lord Lovat's wild highlanders!

This could be kind of fun.... I would start of with some heroclix figs - Wendigo, Sasquatch etc. Available on ebay cheaply.

Sasquatch and/or Wendigo VS the Japanese up the the cold, dark isolated Aleutian islands!

That sort of isolated, oddball theatre of war would be great for an experimental unit of Sasquatch...

Those Pulp Figure hairy hominids, with putty army caps/helmets and grafted WW2 weaponry?

WW2 isn't my area of interest, but this sounds like fun.
