The start of my son's wargaming career.
« on: 08 July 2014, 12:28:11 AM »
My little boy has been desperate to play with figures for a year now. I gave him a load of my spare WoC star wars figures, die cast ATPTs and made him a little starwars storage box that he's kept it all in religiously.  Anyway he's four now and i decided thst he was ready for a game on sunday.

So we pitted chewie against a few stormies and used his special tape measure and giant dice to get the game underway.

I made up some very basic rules, 4" moves, 6" blaster range. hits on 5&6 (wookie) 6 (for stormies as we all know they can't aim ;) ) and basic saves. He took to it like a duck to water. Chewie won, (naturally) but then he actually asked that we put stuff on the table for chewie to hide behind and shoot from.

Yup the clever little bugger worked out the importance of cover!  :).

Anyway two more games under his belt and he's hooked. Its really great to see him have such fun, a massive moment and the beginning of something really special.

Vader and Kenobi were used to great effect with four attacks each and plenty of light sabre noises.

Just thought I'd share this. Oh yeah his twin sister's not a bad painter either so two for two eh? ;)

As ive already said before my wife refused to let me register the birth incase i came back with a Luke and Leia! Lol

(Must remember to have the camera round the right way!)

Looks like a lot of fun!

Playing with your kids is a very rewarding experience.

Kudos for you.

Thanks for sharing.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

Good start. My attempts usually end up with a "let the wookie win" result. That or a suggestion from the other side of the table that switching sides might be good.

Great idea. I've been buying the Horrible Histories figures to let my kids play 'little men'. They're £0.39 at the moment but as they're in blind bags its not one for army list sticklers, as suggested by three vikings, William the Conqueror and a roman vs two Tudor executioners, a pirate, caverman and Alexander the Great. I'm definitely getting them the catapult sets that fire pigs.

Lesson two: hit points and troop values.

So this morning his lordship decided to field Chewie, Ben Kenobi and Paratus, (another jedi) and only three storm troopers and his royal sithness. So we had a chat about relative troop values :D

After that we had a bit more of a balanced game.

Actually ended up with two squads of troopers, an officer and vader. The imperials lost. Chewie became enraged afer taking a wound, (he wanted to use the shouty ra rah! Prepaint enraged wookie model so I quickly added a rule where if chewie is upset there's a chance that he flips out giving him a +2 to close combat but a -1 to blaster).

He also got the hang of wound markers too.

All in all a good progression and clear understanding on his part. Also i was very impressed with  how much he remembered from last time.

Let him have it, it's not wise to upset a four year old. :)

Sounds like a very bright young man. You have every reason to be proud.

Thanks chaps, yup another few games under his belt from last weekend and in the week. He likes to play the 'angry wookie' rule,  (if chewie is wounded he starts pulling people's arms out if their sockets ;)).

Getting a good grasp of the principles of gaming. We used a bit of my primed scenery, (ive promised to dig out some scenery for him to keep).

you really have to sort out the orientation of the grav plates in your star destroyer.

Just think how it would effect all those dinner trays in the canteen.... lol
