Looking for WWII Air combat rule
« on: 12 July 2014, 06:26:47 AM »
Bennett recently going through my various minis and found some 1/144 scale planes.
2x Il2 (1 still neds to be glued)
1x Stuka dive bomber (Ju87)
1x Stuka tank hunter (Ju87)

What I am wanting to know is there any rule set out there the I could use these planes with?
I will be playing against my 6 year old son. I do have some terrain that we could use to (hills and cloth etc)

I don't mind adding in some extra planes ( eg dedicated fighters etc)

But don't want some thing rule heavy..it needs to be (K.I.S.S)
Also non-hex....

Thx for any help/advice given.

Wings of Glory WW2 - ridiculously fun, simple, and cheap for the rules.

I'd second that. As they're both ground attack planes, you might want to get some fighters to hunt them.

I played wings of war back in the mostly WWI planes.

No one stocks Wings of war WWII game here locally.(mostly WWI planes)
I will see what I can find out about the WWII version.
He plays Star Trek Attack wing with me so will jump in on wings of war easily.

We mostly have zevezda minis and one battlefront stuka.

The zevezda planes are affordable.

How easy are the rules to find? Cards/counters etc...

Hi

I would recommend Check Your Six, it's a great game, can fit any scale and is simple to play. Once you have got the basics you it's just a chase of looking at a couple of tables every time you want to shot.

Check Your Six is brilliant fun, we have dedicated group playing every month down at the club. Always four to six players.

However it does require a hex-mat and that, unfortunately, was on the OP's no-go list.

GreyWolf, Wings of Glory would require some investment and modification to bring your kits into the game...

If you were to modify a rule set for quick and easy play... The old WizKids Crimson Skies box is a great starting place. Simple, cinematic and fun, but still a rules modification project.

Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers. P. Cushing

I guess finding rules that I can use with minis I have is not going to be easy. Everything I look at has an "expense"

Wings of glory: (this may not be option as its going to cost a bit to get all of the parts)
Need new bases for each plane
Need manauver deck for each plane.
Need ranger rulers.
Need damage decks.
Need rule book

Check your 6
Need hex mat.(if I could find one that wasn't expensive I would consider this game.)
Need rule book
Not sure what other parts I need.

Well, that's why I think Crimson would be a good choice... Cheap investment in a rules box and very easy to adapt for use with your own planes.

The movement system was very clever and like the best flight games featured simultaneous movement.

Had a look at the crimson skies and the rules look OK but how do I deal with their click style bases?

Had a look at the CY6 rule book but its not cheap option if I want to get the rule book+scenarios.
Also had a look at blazing skies and bag a hun not sure if either will be an easy option for the lad to pick up and play.

Will continue on with my search and see which will fit in to my Budget and ease of play.

The click bases are a gimmick for presenting the plane's data... That said, coming up with a data card for your planes will be the biggest job of the conversion.

The best thing about Crimson is the movement system. It's straight forward.

Will see what I can design up on my days off as a stand in for the dials.
I have no idea where to start for the various WWII planes to create stats.
I guess I need to find a list of the various crimson skies planes and see what comes close to each type of WWII plane and tweak them to fit.

Pretty much. Hope you have fun with it. Keep it simple and play it, it's bound to get better as you go along.

Also it just occurred to me o_o  that Wargame Vault may have some inexpensive rule-sets to try out... Or mine for data.

Hunters in the Sky is one example.

I could also suggest Sturmovik Commander (http://assaultpublishing.com/?page_id=820).

I use canvas eagles for WWI dogfights and the WWII variant called Knights cross.
These rules are free! They are a lot of fun. It does use a hex mat but you can get good quality hex mats from a company called Hotz Mats which are not expensive.

I use 1/72nd models for WWI and 1/144 models for WWII. I use a 5" hex mat.

Here's a link to a Battle of Britain game a ran at my local club. There are also links to my WWI dogfight games involving my big zeppelin.

Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

After much research a chance comment to the owner  of the local gaming store lead to me getting the Wings of Glory WW2 rules and accessories pack. It helped that i had some store credit to use as well. Also getting some flight bases as well.

Will post pics and AAR's as the project grows.
