Very good. I could also see a character like that maybe leading some haiduks into battle.

Would "elder judge" be a decent translation of "starosta jurydyczny"?

He could be leading haiduks, since most of the rotameisters of infantry in polish autorament were nobles. As for starosta jurydyczny= elder judge in a way yes, but he was something more:
