Best 20mm modern military figures?
« on: August 05, 2008, 12:56:20 PM »
Hi everybody,

after painting 20mm WW II models I like the scale more and more.

So since many, many mini experts are on this forum; can anybody point me to good (preferrable) metal 20mm Infantry minis?

Same quality as AB or THQ in WW II if possible!

 ;)
cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - https://www.adpublishing.de

Cannot comment on the figures first hand, but I hear that the stuff from Liberation Miniatures is rather good.

I, for once, am rather fond of the Revell plastics. The modern packs are very good and usually well-cast (which is, admittedly, not always the case with plastics).

Revell is soft plastic, or?
Have painted some recently for WW 2, it is OK, but I like metal more...

Liberation models seem to be OK, but as usual it is more or less impossible to get decent pictures on the net, how these people sell minis is above me...

There is Platoon 20, not sure who makes them now and Steve Bruce had a nice range produces as FAA.  Anyone know where they are now?

FAA is 'Figures, Armour, Artillery' but don't know much about them other than they had a great range of Vietnam stuff in 20mm I can't seem to get!

THE best range of 20mm moderns are Liberation miniatures link: www.rhmodels.com
Not quite upto AB standards but well done and inexpensive and the sheer variety will blow you away!

Also look at Platoon20 as mentioned, Combat/Stonewall Figures and Britannia.

If you really want to get into the whole 20mm WW2 and Moderns scene the best place on the web to join is The Guild - lots of eye candy and a great bunch always ready to help and advise. They also have something they call 'Living Catalogues' where members post bare metal pics of various companyy's products. There are LOTS of Liberation pics in there. Also, Piers is a prolific painter and gamer (he is 'V' here on the LAF).

Hope that helps.

Platoon XX is now manufactured by East Riding Miniatures and available from their website. http://www.eastridingminiatures.co.uk/

The figures are okay, but judging from the WW2 stuff (of which I owned a ton) are a bit hit-and-miss. All a bit on the small side, and some do not have that great proportions.

Note though that some of the PXX stuff is currently being remoulded and unavailable, as said on the website.

Fantassin Miniatures have a huge range of 20mm WW2 stuff, available through Warmodelling.com

http://www.warmodelling.com/index.php?cPath=192

I don't buy anything that small myself, but the ads in WI look really nice.

EDIT: Sorry I seem to have misunderstood your question, thought you were looking for WW2, not Moderns.

Ahh, I was unclear. Modern = 1990+ ...
Sorry!

Agis,
I am a big fan of the 20mm figures from Britannia Miniatures.  They do a small range but nicely done.  There are US, British and Afghans.  Here in the US, the main supplier is FAA (Figures, Armor and Artillery), and they run $1.20 per figure. Best thing is that they sell the western figures singly.
Everyone raves about Liberation minis, but everyone also raves about Perry minis, and I was not overly impressed with the Sudan figures!

Hmm, I liked the WW 2 tanks of Britannia, but the infantry looked a bit "fat".
Basically it all boild down to ordering some from each and then decide...

Thanks everybody!

For pics off modern Liberation check http://www.guildwargamers.com/
I reckon here you will find pics of just about every figure they do.
I used to like the FAA and platoon 20 stuff but to be honest those figs are ancient now and I reckon it shows. You will find that Liberation has just about anything you could possibly want and if you needs more pics of a range just ask somebody on the guild.

Wow Nick!

You rate Britannia Miniatures, but you're not overly impressed with the Perrys Sudan range?  :o

Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder...
