IS EOTD Dead?
« on: 27 July 2014, 03:15:36 PM »
Apart from obsidian3d is anyone else playing EOTD?  After the KS and the initial hype it seems to have died.  I'm aware of a couple of games touring the shows, our very own Thunderchicken and his mate Steve for example, but other than that the world of EOTD appears to be very quiet.  IHMN on the other hand..................

Yes it very very quiet annoyingly so. There was supposed to be a new hardback rulebook release with the Requiem stuff.

There are so many issues with the current draft and its all gone very quiet since the release. I plan to just use my Requiem stuff as re-skinned factions for the existing rules or use them for something else.

IHMN I have as well which I haven't tried yet but may just use the figures for that instead.

Same as Brummie, still painting and pottering with the Miniatures etc - toying with finishing my own Victorian rules just so I have a good use for my miniatures.

the couple of times I queried rules/profiles/updates when it came to EotD/Requiem I was treated like I had asked a rude question of a grumpy old Biddy - my favourite, upon pointing out in the Nemo faction they had included rules for the LxG Nemo and not the "classic" Nemo that came with the Crew Set I was told "There's nothing stopping you writing your own profiles" . . . . . .

No there isn't, but thats not what was promised by the Kickstarter.

If they included (at some point) Custom Faction creation rules - that would be something, but they haven't done that either.

It's almost as if - they've got our money, they've launched their range, and now the backers/customers needs are forgotten - just like the promises made over rules during the Kickstarter are now forgotten.

Sad really . . . . . .

No I don't believe it is or a least we the gamers can and should keep it going through house rules to fix the obvious Requiem problems. The core rulebook which is still being sold is IMO a very solid rule system and I feel its better than IHMN for the type of Gothic Horror games I like to play. Brummie knows my thoughts on this as he's a reader of my blog which began as an EOTD blog and will show ETOD games in the future. You can read my article on it here http://fiendsinwaistcoats.blogspot.com/2014/06/empire-of-dead-thoughts-on-rules.html

I think people are forgetting that West Wind has been around for a long time and their rule systems have been poor just remember Vampire Wars. I was very please to get great game system out of West Wind but not surprised to see them mess it up with the KS Compendium. To me this passiveness among the EOTD fans seems like a hold over from the GW days to me. IHMN isn't a Gothic Horror game I don't see why some clever chaps from the Gothic Horror community can't come up with some decent alternative house rules to turn EOTD into the sort of Gothic Horror skirmish game we've all wanted. The original rule book is still available, all the miniatures are available not to mention many fine Gothic Horror miniatures from other companies. I think the future is in our hands gentlemen.

It's OK saying "The Future is in our hands" - that goes without saying, it doesn't counter the fact promises were made and a lot of people bought heavily into the KS because they were under the impression the game was going to be supported, and the inference was that it was going to be ongoing.

You can't expect indefinite enthusiasm from the customer base WITHOUT some form of support from the parent company.

We're starting to get into it again at our club and having a lot of fun. Most players are sticking to Core Book factions rather than Requiem, I don't think much else is need to play and enjoy the game. Whilst it will never be the game I play the most, it fills a nice void like Gorkamorka, a fun skirmish game with a campaign system that only requires a handful of minis and one book.

I don't think any promises where broken everything promised was delivered, I do think that things (like no dog handler getting sculpted) things got very muddled in the end. Like the KS was a little too much for them to handle. I think you're correct in the inference part there has been no follow up or even answers to legitimate questions. I fully understand your anger I personally haven't player EOTD this year because the guy I play with is feeling the same anger you are.

I believe that the KS format somehow can give people the feeling that they've been cheated in some way. I've seen it in other KS.

I agree with you Hat Guy but I think it could be very popular they way Mordheim was for years with a little support.

It needs more support from the parent company for it to be a success even if they said we're looking at it at some point.

There seems to be a following at some shows I saw some nicely painted stuff at WMMS on some stands displays. I may return to it later in the year.

There was a mention in a BoW Video earlier in the year but it was old news really then it went silent.

I only wish I were playing. I've got a bit of stuff painted up, but short of doing a few demos it seems more people in my area are playing IHMN as well. I'm going to finish up my demo kit (Jack, Holmes and Watson), and then probably my vampire box. I'll likely run the demo scenario a few more times and see if I can get anyone to bite.

After that I'll probably focus on some supers or something.

I think VH is pretty on the money here. I'm a big fan & it's one of my favorite ranges but I'd like to see the rest of the Kickstarter minis released (or some new stuff is always welcome) & a new updated rulebook as well. I fear we'll get no further support and/or releases until it's time for another Kickstarter campaign.
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

I suspect you're right and that's why I see KS causing as much harm to the wargaming community as its helping. Its creating this boom or bust cycle because established companies are running a KS rather than the old method of putting out an new release every couple of months.

When is a game dead ?

We're pretty much referring to the parent company no longer supporting it with new releases etc - this stops a game from "growing"

I love Vor the Maelstrom to bits, but unless I play with another big fan - it's not a game its very easy to get people to play.
