Saucer Project
« on: 06 August 2008, 10:00:12 PM »
I'll save you the trouble now... the pictures are shockingly bad... it's too big to fit in my light tent, the lighting is all over the place and I had to buy a sheet of paper big enough for it as well, so they are not up to my usual standard...

anyhoo... the painted saucer... very monotone really, went for a metallic colour, looks a bit more silver in the flesh. This one is probably closest in true colour.... it will be completely generic, the Dalek was just to hand (part of the rebasing project so hence the mess around the base edge), but should be useful for loads of stuff... not bad for a couple of broken clocks  :D

after discussion on Frothers, went with the no landing gear option... the clear rod supports the saucer, the ramp actually gives quite a bit of stability and has a very small foot print... at 45degrees the ramp is a touch steep, so there are a couple of strips that stop figures from sliding down...

shots of the underside and the hatch (with a couple of ground defence lasers), the ramp is left detachable as it will be easier to store that way...

cheers guys...

if I could have got the upper clock open to remove the hands without shattering it completely it would indeed have been a convertable and I'd have done an inside....  :D

Ahhhh! It´s a wall clock?!? You frickin´ genius! And here I was wondering how much time you spent on getting the underside that cool-looking!

Superb piece. That slightly worn look is very appealing.

Ahhhh! It´s a wall clock?!?

two actually... the upper curve/dome and the inner raised lower section is one clock, the lower curve is the trim from another clock - both broken (I work in an exams office so have lots of clocks kicking about - I am so waiting for the 2 foot one to break, this one is about 10 inches I think)...  the two curves were from different makes and models, but fitted together perfectly, the recess for the hatch was a lucky result from the shape of the back of the upper clock, lots of plasticard on the underside for the hatch area and the middle ring.... job done  :D

I like the clear stand and the ramp.

Your saucer sort of reminds me of the ones in the movie "Earth vs The Flying Saucers". The saucers in that movie had a center cylindrical section that lowered from the body to become the "landing gear" and contained an elevator to lower the crew to the ground.

of course, you can't actually see the clear stand, the saucer is hovering by some unearthly means  ;)

that was similar to the saucer in The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV not movie), which was one of many references considered when I was building this, but it just wasn't big enough for it to look practical....
