Punic Wars in 6mm
« on: 02 August 2014, 10:48:05 AM »
Welcome to my Punic Wars plog.

I am painting up Romans, Greeks and Carthaginians with an assortment of allies and mercenaries in order to game the Punic Wars. I plan to expand the collection to cover most of the major factions in the Mediterranean in the 400 - 100 BC time span once the current project is completed.

First a shot of whats been completed so far,

From left to right, Legio I, Legio II, Legio III and a Samnite contigent.

Javelin armed Psiloi ( I also have sling and bow armed psiloi)

Thessalian Light Cavalry (I will use these as Tarantines)

A couple of close up shots,

Samnite Infantry and Italian Cavalry

Triarii

Equites

Now that is an army!

Looking at the pictures on your blog, you have got a lot of detail and kept some really bright colours too. I think I too often go for muted colours as 'more realistic' but then the figures don't look as good. I think I will try to be braver in my colour choices.

The tufts work well with the smaller figures too - they look like bushes and overgrown areas, which really help make the bases look ace.

Awesome sauce!!

They look great enmasse  8) 8)

Not 100% convinced by the use of flower tufts and I think the reason being that they do get used an awful lot on 28mm figures and hence appear to be out if scale. That's probably just me though  :)

cheers

What a cool array! :-*
I especially like the multi-coloured shields on the Samnites as well as the basing which leaves a bit of space around each unit. Unfortunately, my superficial reading failed to reveal what gaming system(s) you're aiming at.

Really lovely work!  The basing is great.  I see that you are not far off completing a 4 legion consular army.

I am tackling the same subject, but in 28mm.  :-)

What rules are you planning to use?

Thanks for the kind comments :)

I plan to use Hail Caesar to begin with.

As for the flower tufts, I used to think they looked a bit odd, but now I like them. I guess its just a matter of personal preference :)

The fourth legion is on its way, but after painting 3 legions I needed to paint something else for a while  ;). Next up are Greek Peltasts and Heavy Cavalry, and then I will start on some unarmored Hoplites.

Eight bases of Greek Peltasts completed, bigger pic on the blog.

The "Heavy Cavalry" is half finished and while painting them I figured out that it isn't heavy cavalry but Tarantine Cavalry, so I will be swimming in Greek Light Cavalry when those are done.

I wonder where my Greek Heavy Cavalry is though... ;)
