The whole city in 10mm???  :o

Okay, I'm one of those persons who never build anything just for the heck of it. I want to be able to play with it. So do you have any 10mm models to go along with the city or do you just want to try out what it will look like?

In any case, this promises to be really interesting. I'll be looking forward to it.

according to the Tolkien Gateway
J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter in 1955  in which he  apologises for having been busy. Among the subjects Tolkien discusses is a map for The Return of the King and an impending trip to Gondor: Pelargir and Lossarnach - identified as Italy: Venice and Assisi.
So Lossarnach -

Pelargir

soo.....

Based on these notes if it were me I'd be building something Romano-Byzantine from the 8th to 10th century... but that's my minds eye, not Jims.....

I bet he will just use it as a backdrop for a few shots of his 28mm LOTR builds :)

10mm sounds perfect for this kind of undertaking… and luckily there are plenty of 10mm minis out there to use fro LOTR setting if needed. Then again, if you would make it in 6mm you could include even more of the city and surroundings :)

edit: so any estimations or exact numbers even about the population of Minas T in any of the sources?

Why are you thinking about Minas Tirith anyway? You have a lovely hobbit hole already. Why not make a bunch more of those and build Hobbiton? Just think of all the discussions Hobbit construction methods could generate.

(I'm not helping, am I? :D)

Nah, it'd be too big. Going on info gleaned from various websites, the city would be just over six metres wide and about 1.3m tall to the top of the seventh level (approx 1:160 for 10mm).

So, a section that goes on the table edge showing the spur and a couple of levels but mainly the table would show the homesteads and fields etc in the Pelennor  :)

I also forgot about the Ted Nasmith version, which apart from the lack of a black wall is quite a good one

There is also a Japanese version someone has done for Shogun Total war  ::)

The only reference to population I've found (and it's only a cursory look) is 50,000 which to my mind is too many  :?

(I'm not helping, am I? :D

I don't need any help in going overboard with projects  lol

Hobbits is 28mm  ;)

cheers

Am I the only one who is somewhat reminded of the Mont St. Michel in France?

If you go to the Musée des Plans-Reliefs – Hôtel National des Invalides you could copy the model they have there

Maybe that 50000 includes the refugees and such during the war?

So gotta ask at this point, what kind of forces you already have in 10mm? :)

Possibly, I'll look into it a bit more. It would probably include the population of the Pelennor but in the books I remember a couple of passages referring to the people's of the Lebenin etc coming into the city along with small contingents of troops.

I got a couple of packs of the Copplestone humans and orcs that are already based  :D

Needless to say, I feel a dedicated thread appearing in the not so distant future  ;)

cheers

Why don't you just hang a poster with Minas Tirith on the wall as a backdrop and get back to building something sensible?  ;D
