Where can I find good sources for the history of pulp?
« on: August 18, 2014, 08:13:32 PM »
Since I have begun painting Pulp Sci-Fi, I feel it necessary that I learn the history of Pulp Fiction Magazines. I have searched the internet and the only thing I can find are short articles, most of which give the same information. Something more comprehensive would be useful.

One of the things I would like to know is the relationship between the history of the time and the advent of Pulp.  How did one affect the other? I need more in depth information on the authors and illustrators as well.

Most of the books I found reference to are out of print or are VERY expensive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This hour long film from UFO TV, available on youTube, is a pretty good start, with some interviews with leading authors.

There are some guides for collectors of vintage magazines, not just pulp, which cover the publication history pretty thoroughly.  Do a search on Amazon.

The first pulp magazines appeared in the late 19th century, titles like Argosy. Blue Book, etc. and offered adventure stories of all sorts including early SF.  Edgar rice Burroughs and the like.

Interested in any particular period?   The golden age lasted until the 1950s

Thank you. I found it and watched it last night. It gave me a good starting point.

Thanks. I just looked it up on Amazon and I can get it.

I'm interested in Burroughs, Heinlen, Asimove, L. Ron Hubbard etc. I'd like to find out what their lives were like when they were first writing for Pulps. And if I can find them, some of the tragic stories of writers who did not become successful later in life. But, yes The Golden Period.

Thank you all for your help.

Also, although this is a novel, it's about the authors of pulp and contains lot of information as well as being a very good read!

You might want to check out the following, it has a bit of info about pulp magazines in it:

I have no idea on it's availability.

Thank you! I found that on Amazon and the price is a penny. Yes, 1 cent!!

I did find an anthology on Amazon that is free as a download for Kindle. There are more sci-fi pulp stories from the 50's that are only 99 cents. I'm going to get a bunch of those and read them.
