Sails of Glory
« on: August 31, 2014, 10:41:54 PM »
I just purchased the Sails of Glory starter set. I've read mixed reviews on the game.

Curious what other folks might think??

I bought two sets so that 8 ships can fight at a time. I've shown several people how to play and everyone seems to enjoy it. I like the ships, I don't have to put them together nor paint them.

The wind is the key, I've had opponents go off and not be able to tack back. I've lost whole crews in two barrages.

The ships can be improved? Maybe. If you look close to them you may want to redo the prepainting. But on a tabletop distance they work good enough, at least for me. So if you are not too picky on that, I guess you will enjoy the game. That's right, it's all about the wind and planification, never knowing for sure what your enemy is going to do or how well your battleplan will survive the next couple of turns, when you have a fire on the main deck and your crew is being decimated :'( :D. I really enjoyed it. I hope this AAR helps you to get another opinion: http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/03/playing-sails-of-glory.html

Thanks for the responses. I'm looking forward to playing a game that I can take out of the box and go with. I've seen acouple of posts on how to touch up the ships, so I don't see  problem there.

Just got the game in, and tried a go of it. The basic rules are pretty easy to pick up on, and I think that with the advanced rules it will be quite a lot of fun. The miniatures aren't museum quality, but they look quite good for per-painted plastic. It probably would not meet the standards of a true Ship of the Line aficionado, but it certainly will make for a good beer and pretzel game.

I've done the math, and I may buy another starter set. The starter set comes with two frigates, and two ships-of-the-line. You have the option of choosing between two ship names for each of the four ships (the designers were brilliant in that move). If I buy another starter set, I can simply use the ship names that I didn't select in the first starter set, and have 8 individually named ships (four on either side). The starter set can be purchased for less than $70.00. On Amazon buying the ships separately runs about $13 - $25...
