along with captured Neapolitan cannon.......initially cannon barrels were
strapped to a cart...my representation is a "midway" campaign moment! :D

Nice Ged
the hat/head is also precious element for future dollies for other troop types..it was called "Calabrian hat" but was widespread in all over Italy..mainly Central /South...not only iconically associated with Garibaldini of the Campaign in the South as the képi was not at all the rule...many volunteers sported this headgear while the élite small units like Genoese Carabinieri ecc had a képi....as Ged said it's Ok for Picciotti and other irregular types and, contrary to popular belief, many Southerner " irregulars" fought also VS Garibaldini and Piedmontese invasor/occupation forces...other similarly clad irregulars fought VS Pontifical Soldiers and Gendarmes up to 1870 ..in this case they were not Garibaldi liberal volunteers but true outlaws...and quite a few bloody skirmishes  took place..including some nasty and unsportman accidents like "Briganti" "Outlaws" eating liver and heart of their captured victim ;D....anything wrong with that? come on.. i suppose they don't have easy access, in the underdevelopped Italy of mid 19 c., to good sunday roast beefs like their contemporary British colleagues..
.the same mini in calabrian hat could also, in my opinion, pass for irregulars who rebelled VS Napoleon invading forces before and during Murat Kingdom in the Southern lands...also in that case ferocious battles with bands of rebels armed with muskets smuggled thanks to Royal navy...

Italwars

great feedback there. I had considered the wider usage of my Picciotto figures
or some of my Garibaldini who I have also given the Calabrian hat to. an old mate of mine uses my Picciotto as Spanish bandits for the Peninsular war and of course as Italwars says they can be used for the War against Calanbria as waged by General Manhes which I have studied,,,brutal repression and almost constantskirmishes.Murat did well with his Neapolitan troops but he never really swayed the Calabrians.. I hope to do a Boss figure for the Picciotto whem I come up for air!! :o

some few inspirational images....also in this case published by The Italian Army Historical Branch..among them a Garibaldini in Calabrain Hat like the mini from Gringo..and a Piemontese Army Officer "disguised" in a Red Shirt volunteer in bougeois dress. (see the Artillery belt and the shako)...you can detect also on the Garibaldini Standard bearer uniform a similar belt and haversack belonging to the Piedmontese Army...from memories i read that , in some battles, at least a quarter of men among supposed to be Red Shirt patriots where, in fact, Piemontese Soldiers send to this ambguos and covert operation...as Piedmont/Italy were at war with the Kingdom of Naples...and their main concern was, above all, to don't enerve their big brother Napoleon the 3rd while, in the same time, complain  the British Government who sponsored also the liberal faction of the Piedmontese/Italian Government.
the last pict is a nice battlescenes between Guardia di Finanza (a sort of Military Border Police Light Infantry ) and the so called anti Italian Units "Briganti"...those patriotic outlaws sported, as i wrote in another posting, a dress similar to the last produced mini from Gringo with is typical hat.

the firts scene, not only for having been catched by an ewitness who participated at the Campaign,  is quite interesting...Lead by Garibaldi himself this column marching to Calatafimi show the company of élite Carabinieri Genovesi clad in blue ...but at the end of the pict, there is an interesting clue,  we can see the artillery pieces lead by armed sailors...maybe they were those same sailor crewmen from the Italian Compagnia Rubattino through which the ship carrier to Marsala was hired..but i doubt that those last minute enrolled "patriots" had been so enthousiastic, being not Military sailors, to follow, whitout any reserve, the "great man"...just a thought .would'nt they be some RN Sailors offering, "voluntarly", their experience up as to man an artillery piece...?...it's has been broadly recognised that Her Majesty's Consul in Palermo was very active in providing intelligence to Garibaldi's emissaires before and after the landing and i read that, even at Volturno, the strangely efficient Garibaldini Artillery was totally manned by disguised Piedmontese regulars and RN crews .
the second image its also inspiring..Bixio with is white cape, Garibaldi, the few mounted guides and, on the right, a small bunch of Piciotti in brown peasant clothes..some of them are even mounted...usually on sturdy Sicilian mules or donkeys

some other images from my archive:
a) Garibaldini various uniforms in Sicily...as you can see , not only red shirts, but is plenty of room for panached and semi-regualr types..
b) Landing at Marsala. a naif colour drawing of the Fifties ..on the second plan a typical Picciotti with the headgear bonnet type very iconic of Sicilian peasants.
c) Garibaldi HQ in Sicily  including Thur, Bixio, Missori, Ricciotti Garibaldi and Father Pantaleo
d)Some other "late" Garibaldini...the lanscape is'nt , without any doubts, a Sicilian one, probably the image refers to their worst defeat at Mentana in 1867..their aspect is more uniformed..red shirts and képi are now production items..Garibaldi decline to stay with his men up to the end of the battle..he cowardly "escaped" to the Italian border as soon as he perceived the defeat at the end of the Pontifical Army and their French Allies..the Keep on the background seem to be the "Castle of Mentana" where the last , leaderless and without orders, few  Garibaldni die-harders resisted with valour until the next morning of the battle

Italwars you have surpassed yourself...fancy a job with Gringo40s ;) lol??

The artillery crew for the Garibaldini is an interesting quest ...with ordinary Garibaldini for sure crewing the Artillery though as you say by Volturno there
effect and accuracy had vastly improved (with the help of captured Neapolitan
pieces...undoubtably some Sailors..British more then likely "absent without leave"
and possibly Piedmontese. the inclusion of disguised piedmontese is an interesting
thought

The Carabineri Genovese look like an interesting group.

Tried to google more about them and came across this website - http://miles.forumcommunity.net/?t=57548462 with some other images. It sounds like they were formed with the puspose of supporting Italian independence and fought the Austrians in a number of engagements. They also joined the 1000 and fought with Garibaldi.

The uniform looks to be a baggy blouse/shirt, soft kepi and baggy pants. Could be a nice little "regular" looking diversion from redshirted figures.

Thanks again Italwars!

Thanks Emir...nice pictures..
Carabinieri Genovesi originated from a Genoa Shooting Club...some think like the Austrian Schutzen..very fashionable sport at that time...they had a good esprit de corps...whre few in number but at Calatafimi they acted as an élite...making the most of the fire fighting with their "Swiss Carbines"..they were the only troops armed with a decent weapon..the rest od Red Shirts only had rusty converted smooth bore antiquated muskets and few (Guides) Spencer Type Revolver-Carbines..the Piciotti..few vintage guns and many pikes and farm tools...The Carabinieri also lead the final charge...
