Malto.......great picture thanks ,not seen this one before. I have considered
the Hungarian Hussars and they  were a splendid looking and effective unit
and caused a great deal of havoc at Volturno  if my memory serves me correctly
if I did them that would complete my Austrian Maximiilian cavalry contingent
for Gringo40s Mexican Adventure.

and theres always the Garibaldini guides who grew in number..a glamorous
looking unit as well

Gringo, do I understand you correctly that the Hungarian hussars could I actually be dual use and recyclable in Mexico? And yes, do the guides as well - the whole lot!

For what i read about Volturno the "Garibaldesi" cavalry...(giudes ecc..) did practically nothing..no better was the Neapolitan one..i toured the battelfield and, like many others in the South (Calatafimi, Mentana..ecc..) it was certainly not the best place to operate for cavalry except in reconaisance role..as did almost always Neapolitan Cacciatori and Red Shirt's Guides..before the battle the flamboyants Neapolitan Lancers operated a rather limited and timid charge attempt VS Red Shits vanguard without any result....About the so called "Hungarian Legion" it's mentioned above all during the harsh repression operated against civilians who supported the so called "Briganti" patriots....the death toll among civilians they operated was easily understand as they where recruited by Garibaldi as a sort of Foreign Legion of mercenaires with a penchant for dirty jobs and dash VS innocent victims like at Auletta where they executed about 50 innocents including the local Priest..probably if he had been similar to father Pantaleo they would have spared or recruited him  lol...have a look with google translator:

said that..the hussar uniform was very nice

thanks Malto a fascinating insight ........how much is left of the battlefield
that is recognisable? Garibaldi was no saint for sure as in all wars
depredation and atrocities are carried out by both sides...........Garibaldi,s
men at least did not end up in the cooking pot unlike some retreating Neapolitan
troops.! :o

Greg..i'm not Malto  >:D ;) :)...the main thing that could be understood, even nowdays,of the  battlefield of Volturno is , as sai, the rough .very ondulated aspect..few open spaces. between broken terrain ..ecc...in fact i can understand this by confronting with Army Survey maps of 1929 which were not so different from Risorgimento period..from late Sixties and Seventies..everything has cjanged..plenty of horrible small town..with illegal buildings ...it's today probably the most populated aria of Italy..totally controlled by the Neapolitan version of the Mafia..the reign of unemployment, explotation of clandestine manpower from Sub Saharian desperate people...weapon smuggling, drugs and other nasty things...on the opposite the battlefields of Sicily are recognizable.. (Calatafimi, Milazzo) while, a little bit off topic, but my favourite Garibaldi battlefield..which is Mentana near Rome close to where i live..where in 1867 the Red Shirts were defeated by Franco-Pontifical Army is very recognizable...i succiently know this battlefield and can still detect elevations where bloody mélées where fought..together with a pair of building in which holes from Zuave carbines or French Infantry's Chassepots BLR could still be seen...unfortunatly..about 20 years ago i was so mad to give away a large stone with an inscription, in French, from a Pontifical Zouave...

Ged...during XMAS holyday i'll be able to search..better excavate into my pile of documents and illustrations for the period and post here something...i also have some nice stuff concerning uniforms (Neapolitan and Pontifical)..many of them scanned from quite a few sources..but..as i'm very lazy plus very rough at handling software...i cut and pasted the plates, map, line drawings..reduced or cancelled all what i don't need and collect it into some Word Files..with some captions ready made for painting my minis..a sort of very naif scratckbook..maybe i can try to send you some pages if they are not too heavy..it could be the only way as i cannot post here some Word pages...if you want you can write me or send me pm with your mail and i'll try to send you something...
my mail is : ital.wars@libero.it
