I would strongly suggest doing up some rules for Zorro et al through Gloire and posting them here or on the Speakeasy. Having the templates and weapons and such ready to go would (im sure) help people to make the decision to buy the minis. BTW, Zorro rocks.

I read a short story once that posited that Zorro was a were-fox, and passed on the curse and Zorro name down through the years till (i think) it was post-WWII and anti-hispanic riots and troubles in California, when a new Zorro armed with a switchblade? took up the mantle and were-fox curse. Very cool.
And in the fury of this darkest hour
We will be the light
You've asked me for my sacrifice
And I am Winter born

Nice idea about the rules.

Out of interest, who 'owns' Zorro?
Is he a folk/myth figure, or was he a literary or purely filmic creation?
If the latter, is he out of copyright?

If so, I can feel a 'Zorro - The Panto' coming on...  ;)

Well there is a musical now running in the West End with music by the Gypsy Kings. I can't bring myself to go and see it, although the reviews have been quite good...

He's a fictional character from a Pulp novel of 1919 called "The Curse of Capistrano" by American writer Johnston McCulley.

I have no idea how the rights thing goes. I never quite understood when and how things become public domain. The laws are different in various countries, too.

Normal rule is it falls in the public domain x years after the author's death. The number of years tends to vary though. I think for the US it has been set on 70 years (instead of the usual 50) to protect the Disney rights.

As you can get it as a free eBook, one would imagine that it is in the Public Domain. But the actual use of the character in other media, is that covered by something else? Even if the book is out of copyright, is it possible that someone still owns the rights to the character?

That's the part that confuses me.

These people seem to be claiming to own the rights to Zorro:

I think the way it works, you could make a miniature of Zorro, the character from The Curse of Capistrano, as that is long out of
copyright.

However you couldn't make a model of Zorro, the character from the 1998 movie The Mask of Zorro, as that is still within copyright.

Wikipedia has a good page on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Domain

Basically copyright lasts for 95 years, but you have to renew after 28 years to get the full 95.  Anything more than 95 years old becomes Public Domain.

If you look around on their website, Zorro Productions say they own the rights to the character, the name "Zorro" and his likeness.

I certainly don't think they would agree that you could say it was the Zorro from "The Curse of Capistrano" and get away with it, as they see it ALL Zorros belong to them.
