Completed colonial New Zealand Wars British in blue jumpers
« on: November 02, 2014, 02:00:23 AM »
I’ve finally completed painting my first couple of units of infantry from Perry Miniatures’ conjectural British Intervention Force range.

My British infantry, however, are anything but conjectural, as I’ve painted them to represent the soldiers who fought in the colonial New Zealand Wars during the 1860s/70s.  In this theatre, instead of the tradition red coat, the British soldier wore a blue ‘smock’ or ‘jumper’, which was a loose-fitting jacket with a single breast pocket.

Nice work on those Perry minis,I'm sure they'll be cropping up in lots of games and periods in the coming months, especially as there's artillery and cavalry in the pipeline. :)

Great job. Any  cunning plan on what to do with the "left over"  ensigns?

Two of the four ensigns may end up carrying binoculars (correct for the period??) or telescopes, instead of flag poles.

The other two may end up carrying plain union jack flags, because although colours were left behind, I've found evidence that at least one regiment had a plain union jack, as well as plenty of pictorial evidence of such flags flying over camps.  But whether these plain flags were actually carried into battle is a moot point ...
