Actually, a rather good method is spray adhesive, hit the baseboard with it and then attach it.

Then you run over the edges with a mix of thinned out plaster and white/pva glue to harden the edges.

If you're going with a thicker thing of foam, put some nails through the board that will embed in the foam...make sure they don't go all the way through, though you can use longer nails for areas you want to put other layers of foam. Give the nails a bit of glue before you put the pieces together.

The end result is an extremely good bond and bypasses the problems of spray adhesive directly on the foam...

Guys, thanks for all the tips.  I used a combination of these to achieve the results I needed.  First up was a 600 x 600 sheet of 9mm MDF as the base through which I drilled out a number of holes to pass through bamboo skewers.

Next I used Gorilla Wood Glue to lay out a grid of glue on the foam.

I then laid the MDF base on the foam and hammered in the skewers to hold the two in place.  Next I applied a whole lot of weight to ensure there was no warping.  I knew my old wargames magazines would come in handy for something.  :)

I waited 24 hrs to ensure everything was dry (I could have probably shortened this but I wanted to be sure) and the end result is this - a perfectly good bond and no warping.

Now they are off to be textured and painted.  For the end result please see my colonial thread 'Follow that Camel' http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=72065.0  in a few days time.

Once again thanks for all the help.
