Some Western Desert stuff

As a side show I've been painting up some WW2 stuff in 15mm. It's my only 15mm stuff and WW2 is definitely a minor interest for me. Consequently I have chosen to collect for and game just a few months of the war in one theatre. I've chosen the Western Desert November to December 1941. Operation Crusader was a close run thing with armour a plenty - perfect.

On board artillery pieces and off board artillery markers

I especially like the offboard artillery markers

The off board artillery markers are Heroics & Ross 1:300 guns, painted gloss red (they are markers) on BF plastic bases. HR guns are ridiculously cheap so are just the job. It makes life so much easier having counters at the edge of the table (showing orientation) than having them marked on roster sheets (which no one here ever wants to use after  hard day at the office). Keep it simple, keep it visual. We use markers for everything around here:

Retreating (shell burst) and very commonly used, because we play Piquet, unloaded markers (crater).


Casualties are marked with clutches of stones on 'terrained' pennies, suppression markers are tufts / small bushes on 'terrained' pennies. At some point I'm going to break up some plastic kits for bits of wreckage for other markers.

clouds and explosions as "hits"  are always good
I was consiering the use of casualties minatures and dropped weapons and equipment for losses and morale

I haven't thought around "universality"  of markers when one plays different rules yet.

it would probably help having sets of scenery clutter and using them accordingly for every rule set

These look really good, Olicana.  I must steal the off board marker idea - I load my players' forces onto shelves and they often forget about the off board artillery.

Thanks, I just wish I had more time to spend on my WW2, but so many other interests are also pressing. Funny thing is, this is a project that it will only take time to finish. A few years ago, I was offered a 40% discount on BF FoW stuff due to some work I'd done for WI - if I made the order worthwhile - so I bought £2500 worth! Job done. Until it came to finding the time to paint it all.

It didn't all fit in one box, but this is a photo of the contents of first box that came.

OMG!

But then 15mm WWII is blue chip wargaming, so it was a worthwhile investment
