rules for the Mexican War?
« on: 07 December 2014, 02:00:07 AM »
Hello,
Just wondering what rule sets out there people are using. I have been thinking of Black Powder, but I'm not sure if they would do the two sides justice. Thoughts?

We've used Sharp Practise in the past to great effect.

Sharp Practice has a supplement specifically for the Mexican/American war.

Nope, they were Texians, not yet Americans, still Mexican subjects. lol

Sorry for derailing your thread with our bickering Jagergreen. The Too Fat Lardies ruleset Sharp Practice and its supplements are excellent for large scale skirmishes of up to 150ish figures per side. Not sure what to recommend if you want to do full battles.

For larger battles, Fire & Fury works well (there's some Mex-Am adaptations on their website) though I've not tried the Regimental version which would lend itself better to the size of most battles.

Spring 2015 also sees the release of 'Gone to see the Elephant' by TVAG, which are period-specific rules, with a lot of supplementary information, worth looking out for.

As previous posts have mentioned, SP is excellent for games with up to 150 figures per side (and can handle more with a few tweaks to the way the Action Deck is used) at a 1:5 or 1:10 scale, which covers most of the battles.

Which figures are you going to use? I keep being tempted by the Eureka 18mm range (some more packs being added soon, I hear) but Blue Moon have a small range in the same scale, and the First Corps 28mm range is very characterful.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't considered Sharpe's Practice. My figures are mainly 1st Corps with some Old Glory in the mix. I have them based four to a base in two ranks.

It's worth taking a look at the Mex-Am supplement for SP (available as a pdf), the scenarios alone make it worthwhile. There are some useful 'big battle' rules in the ACW supplement 'Terrible Sharp Sword' that may be useful.

Your basing will work fine - the typical Group is 8 figures strong, all you might find useful are some extra counters to record casualties, but these are easily produced - I use 30mm square bases with beads numbered 1-4 on each face and decorated with a bit of ground cover and other battlefield cover - and maybe a few individually based/readily identifiable Big Men.
