Oh for the wings, for the wings of a Cthulhu......
« on: September 10, 2008, 12:16:25 AM »
Evening all,

Well I have started a Cthulhu to call my own. The body is that of a metal GW Balrog I picked up on eBay, sans head, tail and..... wings. This leads to a problem, I'm recently returned to the shenannigans of modeling and painting and dont feel I will do justice to the Great Deep Ones wings, so have you any Idea of suitable ones that are available cheaply?

Heres the Original model in its over the top form   lol

And heres what I have done with him so far for some perspective.....

I know that he needs alot more padding and to be built up, I always feel Cthulhu would have a good belly on him and a big arse (sounds a bit like me  :D ), all that deaming, would pile on the pounds of any Old God. This is just the first rough sculpt onto the frame.

So any ideas on wings that may be suitable? Or any suggestions, comments or advice are as ever greatfully recieved!

Been a great help so far this forum, so thanks in advance all!!
He comes, he comes, Zalgo!

You want smaller wings, right? Try taking a look at some of the larger Heresy-demons (Andy has had his casting machine break down lately, otherwise you might have been lucky to make him cast up a set of your preferred wings  :?  )

Some battering/drilling to make the wings look putrefied could do the trick..?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I think those balrog wings are pretty slick as they are...I'd use them, bend 'em in a little at most. Could drill out a couple holes in the bottoms for ratty look. You could also make his face tentacles bigger/longer to offset the huge wings?  Listen to some Dio...it may help... >:D

That is looking pretty slick right there, mate. Nice one.  :)

I did a bit of scouting on the GW Store for "Wings" and that gives you a few options. I think the Bloodthirster or Dragon wings would be best for what you need.

http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?WCI=Menu&WCE=Search

I've also emailed you a copy of the collector's and classics guide they have now they don't do the full archive range any more.

EDIT: No I haven't, it's too ruddy big to go as an attachment. Download it from the store instead, you lazy bugger.

There are some really nice old dragons in there that have become available again, and with your ebay skillz you may be able to find parts from them cheaper, same goes for the ones above.

Just a thought.

And how are you getting on with Cthulhu's mini-me, by the way? Any progress?

You may not be this motivated but here is an incredible article for scratchbuilding your own wings.  This guys work is pretty amazing.

I second the suggestion of using the Balrogs existing wings.  It shouldn't be too hard to drill and desiccate them down.  Neat idea using the Balrog fig btw.  ;)

Wow!

Thanks all, believe it or not it only cost me £2.00 on eBay.... With another £2.00 P&P, it just cried out for a squid head to me!  ;D

Sadly the wings and the head were not part of the deal, but I have seen some cheap ones on the GW site, cheers Rob lad and Arrrggghhh, with appropriate arm movement. As for listening to Dio, not sure, perhaps some Rammstein?

Think with the poor guys current problems hes got enough on his plate, I'll just buy some sculpting stuff from him instead. Thanks for the idea though.

And finally

Cheers lad  :D the mini Cthulhu, or the Not So Great Young One is coming along OK, just made him some moobs and a belly, as you do!

Thanks for the ideas all, all comments greatfully recieved, if the big lad works out well I may just post a load of WIP pics on here  ;)

Great site, never been on there, a huge amount of stuff I'll have to try someday, maybe when I'm a bit more skilled, so around 2053 maybe?  lol

That looks really good, I think some curved demon wings would look good. How are you going to do the tentacles?

Thanks twrchtrwyth, for the wings link, got it on watch now.

I quite like the idea of smaller, bat like wings as well, after all Cthulhu isn't renowned for his aerial skills, i always think of him/it/they/whatever as shambling along. As for the tentacles, I think I will use some wire and milliput to build them and then put a few suckers on with green stuff. Just going to have to be careful building them up, I want them to be nice and organic, not as perfect as you see on some Cthulhu's. He's getting on a bit, so he needs to look a bit battered and fresh from aeons under the sea.

Started building up his brow which has made him look like a demonic Daffy Duck at the moment, its almost tempting to make that instead   ;D

Think I will have to shorten his face a bit, what do you all think? Is he a bit like the Horse that went into a pub at the moment?  ???

I don't think you need to shorten the face, but maybe bulk out the back of the skull. It would give it more balance I feel. All the illustrations of t'Old Un I've seen have him with a geet big bulbous napper. (Like the one in the banner at the top of the page, really.)

If you keep it the size it is, when you put the tentacles on, it'd be like a giant, nekkid mind-flayer from D&D coming at you.

That's a bit wrong, mate.  lol

I've been bulking out its heed a bit tonight, but I think your right Bob of the Jolly, bulbous is the way forward! I will have to balance him out a bit all over though. Shame as I was quite proud of the belly sculpt, ah well.

Bulbous napper? Do you mean me or Cthulhu?

Hmmm wonder if I can find a suitable corpse for him to be waving about...  lol

Danny,

what about these:

http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99120299017&orignav=9

£5.00, so not too bad for GW. Not sure on size, but almost certainly smaller than the Balrog's.

They look a bit more "Cthulhu-ish" to me, too  :)
