Help needed painting spaceships

Hi!

I got some GZG spaceships for Christmas and now I want to paint them up. Unfortunately I feel quite daft: How do you hold them for painting? I tried to stick one onto the plastic base that came with the ships, but the little plastic thingy broke up and is now stuck in the hole at the underside of the ship. This is no real problem as I want to base them on clear Litko bases anyway, but that's not practical for painting as I would certainly ruin those.
So, what am I missing? There must be an easy trick… I feel like the proverbial oxen standing before the barn door
