Poldercon - Game 2
« on: 12 February 2015, 08:52:11 PM »
And here’s the second of the four Poldercon game reports. The second  game was between Jurjen and Arjen. For both it was the first time they played the game, so it was a mix between a demo and a participating game. Jurjen played the Nazis and Arjen controlled Wolf and co.
Agent Wanda clearly was a star at subterfuge, as she started in hiding in the jungle (Jurjen drew the Subterfuge event card). On the other side, the silly Mr. Grumpy was lost in the jungle (a frigging monkey…), as Arjen drew the Delayed card.

Scenario: The Eyes of Quatzacutl

Both leagues are in South America in search of the ancient Eyes of Quatzacutl, two giant pink rubies. They have entered the area around the ancient temple of Quatzacutl. They know the Eyes must be somewhere in this location, but they don’t know where.
The game starts with three Plot Points on the table; two are close to the leagues and one is right in the middle of the table. Once a league completes a Plot Point, they will find the location of the Major Plot Point: the Eyes. The gems are either in the temple, in the Crystal Skull’s eye sockets OR they are hidden in the gigantic hollow tree. Once the other player also completes a Plot Point, both players will know where to go.
So the race is on for the Eyes of Quatzacutl…there is not much daylight left and the two leagues must hurry to find the treasure. The game lasts 6 turns and at the end of turn 6 night has fallen and both leagues retreat to the safety of their camps.

The start

Leading from the front, Wolf moved up towards the first Plot Point. He went for the secret grove straight away.

The Nazis moved up towards the first Plot Point. While Stahl moved towards the temple, both Franz and Minerva moved centrally, with Minerva trading shots with the sailors (without effect).

Seeing his Captain close to danger, Seadog Kerry quickly moved in for the grove to snatch the golden idol from danger. But the Seadog didn’t spot the hidden poison dart trap. Ten darts flew and Kerry was hit multiple times. With a gurgling “Urgh” he went down and out!

While Stahl traded shots with Bosun Hayes, Minerva easily figured out the bas-relief puzzle and found out the Major Plot Point was located inside the temple. She signaled her men to go for the temple.

Seeing his Seadog down, Wolf carefully evaded the trap and with grace he grabbed the golden idol. Unlocking the idol, he found a drawing which easily told him the Eyes were located in the temple. Far away, Deckhand Sam moved up by the huge jungle tree, staying in cover.

The Nazis quickly raced for the temple. All three allies moved up and Franz took the lead, clutching his MP40 tightly.

Far, far away the monkey finally arrived and he quickly ran for the temple. Bosun Hayes moved behind the large rock and Wolf traded shots with Franz. Although Wolf clearly was the veteran fighter, he was hit by the rapid fire and took a nasty wound!

While Mr. Grumpy scrambled up the temple, Minerva and Dieter fought with Bosun Hayes. The strong sailor clearly is a brawler and not a shooter and took a hit!

Then came Stahl, the supersoldier, and he coolly aimed his pistol and shot Bosun down. “And stay down, stupid…”. Sidekick Bosun Hayes was out of the game!

Dieter pulled the pin and threw his big grenade at Captain Wolf. Although the grenade landed right on target, the Captain slammed the grenade back and he wasn’t hurt at all.

With all the combat it seemed like the leagues forgot why they’re actually here! But no, Franz bounded up the stairs and started to pry the gems from the skull. He had a good start when that darn monkey jumped in the temple and also went for the Eyes! The race is on…

Seeing the critter getting in the way of her goal, Minerva quickly rushed him to kick him out of the building. But the monkey was too fast and he jumped away from her reach. Dodge succesfull!

Who better to smash a monkey than the sour Herr Stahl. The Nazi stomped into the temple and kicked and punched at Wolf’s pet…but the monkey just was too fast! He dodged the blows and kicks and simply scrambled to the other corner! A Leader and a Sidekick going for the monkey…but Mr. Grump evades both. Clearly monkey business…

Wanda saw her chance and she moved to the Eyes too. Pushing hottie Franz aside, she easily grabbed the Eyes from the eye sockets. The Nazis were in the lead now!

Seeing the secret agent shoving the gems into her pocket, Wolf unloaded his Mauser at her. Several shots hit true and the dame dropped the gems down the stairs…cling…clang…cling…clang!

Who better to quickly grab the rubies than our favorite pet, Mr. Grumpy! Like a true monkey, it jumped down and grabbed the Eyes with a big grin. Wolf would surely reward him with some ripe bananas if he delivered them!

Dieter threw grenade after grenade at Wolf, and the ground around the Captain was resembling a crater more and more! At the same time, Minerva moved out the temple and fired at the monkey. But Mr. Grumpy was luckier than ever before and escaped unscathed!

But then came Stahl with his heavy leather boots. “Give me those, you untertier!”

…and Mr. Grumpy’s luck finally ran out. He couldn’t evade Stahl’s devious blows and kicks and was stomped down.

BOOM! Another grenade hurled at Wolf…

…and this time he was hurt by the blast. He was bleeding quite excessively now. Wanda saw Wolf reeling and she saw the chance to race down the stairs towards the ancient statue for another treasure.

Although Mr. Grumpy scrambled up again, Stahl was faster than the monkey and grabbed the Eyes for his lady.

And FINALLY Deckhand Sam arrived to assist his boss in the fight. Where has he been??

Mr. Grumpy tried to dodge away from herr Stahl, but the veteran grabbed the creature by its fur and threw him into the wall, stunning and downing the creature. Damn…that Stahl sure is a fiend! He then jumped down the dais. This was also the final action of the fight…

End of game: Captain Wolf 1VP – Minerva 4VP
As darkness fell, both leagues retreated to safety. The wounded Wolf moved out with his golden idol, while Minerva had the Eyes of Quatzacutl and the clues from the bas-relief.
Victory went to the Nazis!
Once again a great game and this one went totally different. It was great to see two new players picking up the core mechanics so quickly and duking it out in 90 minutes. They both used the Fortune Cards very well too, a great accomplishment for new players.
So by now two games down and two more games to go…
