Hello from North east England
« on: February 14, 2015, 08:37:05 PM »
Hello,  I'm not a great forum user but I like the subjects and content here so I thought joining and doing the odd contribution here and there would be of interest to either side, hopefully.
I've been Wargaming continuously since the early 70's, naval, scifi, vsf, fantasy and historical in a variety of scales (most of them).  I scratch build a lot of things including scenery, ships, Sky galleons, spaceships and write my own wargame rules generally.    Have also founded and run different wargame clubs over the decades but currently am club free (can't find one that fits my free time).   Have also put on quite a few demo and participation games at shows over the years, for some reason (yet to be determined).
 Anyway, nice to be here!

Where in the north east?

If you're near Scarborough we have 3 or 4 clubs....
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Thanks for the welcome, I live in South Tyneside so Scarborough is a bit far but thanks for the advice.   I have maybe 5 clubs within half an hour but Saturday or Sunday afternoons are just not ideal for those of us with families etc.
Anyway, will keep looking and something will eventually turn up.
Will post some olde sky galleon pics this week when I get a chance.
Cheers!

Thanks for the advice, I think Durham is a bit further than I'd like to travel regularly but thanks anyway. Whitley Bay might be a possibility if it takes off, drop me a link sometime, thanks.

Hi James, it is indeed 'Geordie Paul' or maybe Admiral 'Hulio Geordio' or many other silly campaign names and it was on your recommendation from the last time I saw you that I finally got around to looking on this forum, and here I am.    I left Barrow (escaped) and Vickers a year ago and am working back on Tyneside now, its a novelty I can tell you.
I see you have got the victorian SF bug (partially my fault? sorry) and am making some great stuff !     good to hear from you anyway mate. Ive stuck some of the olde sky galleon models on the 'nef sticky and will put all the 1/600 scale stuff on sometime too.
Looking forward to seeing your monster 28mm Mikasa finished !   then you'll need to build some Russian pre-dreds too and find a huge hall for more Fletcher Pratt...
cheers.

If you want a hall for a large game I have access to two.

We put on an Arnhem game a few years back with a table 32 feet by 4 feet, bur have a bigger hall if you want to use the floor.

Aha! Good to see you matey  :D

Yes, I saw your monsters and had fond memories and yes, it is all your fault  ;D Although I can only thank you because I'm loving it.

We're in the middle of moving at the mo so no building from me for a while then it's Salute prep but she'll be out after that getting bits and pieces done.

Still working on the boats or something else now?

It's funny, I was thinking of the Space 1889 campaign we did only a few weeks ago and wondering whether to give it a go, a 1:600 Mikasa neff would be much easier at that scale  lol

Hope to see you posting new stuff soon  :)

cheers

James

Hi fastolfrus, thanks for the info on the hall but I'm afraid Scarborough really is too far for me to commute for games. Much as I would like to put big games on!

James, I'm still designing ships at work, it's just that they're not grey or black now! Mostly oil and gas, recently did a little work relating to the 'Pieter Schelte' one of the biggest ships in the world, have a Google for it, it's cool!
I would certainly recommend 1/600 scale for sky galleons, especially if it's gunboat types you're going to use. On the other hand bigger ships like battleships or cruisers are more easily handled at 1/1200.  I'm going to post pictures of the 1/600 sky galleon fleets soon and there are a few Japanese flyers in there, I quite like them too!
Watch this space.
Cheers.
